MARATEA HAT
P A T T E R N B Y E D E L W E I S S K N I T A N D C R O C H E T - I S A B E L L C R O C H E T

Maratea Hat is a simple crochet summer hat. Worked top-down starting with
a magic ring, it has a simple and essential design. Thanks to specific
increases you can shape a classic silhouette which ends with a slim brim.
What I like the most about this hat is the store-bought look of it. This pattern
was created in collaboration with Tricot Cafè, an Italian yarn producer&seller
that I thank for the support to create this beautiful project and pattern.

Post your project on Instagram or Tiktok with the hashtag #marateahat e tag me

You can find video tutorials of this pattern on my TikTok (in Italian).

This pattern is completely free and cannot be sold in any way. If you have
purchased this pattern please contact me as soon as possible.

1. Measuremens and sizes

The entire pattern is built from your own
measurements, so it is extremely customizable and
can be used also for children. You will need:

A: circumference of your head

B: vertical measurement from upper join of your
hear to the end of your forehead

MEASURE A: ………. cm/inches

MEASURE B: ….…… cm/inches
Now divide A by 3.14 and multiply by 0,95 :
A / 3,14 x 0,95 = ………. cm/inches(C)
We will use these measurements later.

2. Materials
1. One 250 grams cone of Rafia Bio Tricot-Cafè yarn (I picked color 03) is more than enough for an adult size hat.
Here you can find the link to Tricot Cafè online shop. With code ISABELLCROCHET10 you get 10% off at check

2. Crochet hook size 4.5 mm
3. Stitch markers
4. Yarn needle
3. Requested skills
This is an easy project, suitable for beginners. I don't recommend this pattern if you have never crocheted before
only because rafia yarn is not as soft and easy to work as some other fibers. If you already have crocheted one or
two projects you are ready to go for it, and it will be an easy and fun project.
To make this pattern you need to know (or learn): magic ring, single crochet and single crochet increase.

4. Abbreviations
sc : single crochet
s : stitch
inc : increase
marc : stitch marker

5.Start your work

Start by doing a magic ring and 6 sc in it. Place marc in the last sc.

6. Crown
First you will create a circular piece of fabric with some increases in every row.
At the end of every row you will find in brackets the exact number of stitches you will have at that moment.
I suggest to check your stitch count every once in a while to make sure you are on the right track. You will add 6 new
stitches every row (by doing 6 increases) following a scheme that will be easy to memorize.
Every time you work the last sc of the row move your marc on the new last stitch.

ROW 1 : work 6 inc as follows: 2 sc in every s (12)

ROW 2 : *1 inc, 1 sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (18)
ROW 3 : *1 inc, 2 sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (24)
ROW 4 : *1 inc, 3 sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (30)
ROW 5 : *1 inc, 4 sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (36)
ROW 6 : *1 inc, 5 sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (42)

You will continue to work this way until your work measures a diameter (from side to side of the circle through the
centre) of C = ..................... cm/inches (see paragraph 1).
I will write the directions until row 12 but stop before it or after it according to your measurements.

ROW 7 : *1 inc, 6 sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (48)

ROW 8 : *1 inc, 7 sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (54)
ROW 9 : *1 inc, 8 sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (60)
ROW 10 : *1 inc, 9 sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (66)
ROW 11 : *1 inc, 10 sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (72)
ROW 12 : *1 inc, 11 sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (78)

WRITE HERE the last row you crochet filling the gaps and finding numbers D, E and F

ROW ......... : *1 inc, ............ sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (........)

(D) (E) (F)

7. Body
Now we will work the vertical part of the hat by doing single crochet-only rows.
Every row will have F=......... stitches and you will work many rows as needed to reach vertically measure B=.............
cm/inches. While doing that you can start to try on your project and check your progression.
Every time you work the last sc of the row move your marc on the new last stitch.
Work every row this way:

VERTICAL ROWS : 1 sc in every s (............) (F)

When you reach B move to next paragraph.
8. Brim
To create the brim you will make some more increases.
Make two increase rows and one sigle crochet-only row to create a gradient.
You will repeat this sequence three times.
Start the increase row from where you stopped in paragraph 6.
Write the measurements you found before and calculate G, H and I :
D=.......... G = D + 1 = ...........
E=.......... H = E + 1 = ............
F=.......... I = F + 6 = ...........

The first row of increases will be as follows:

ROW ......... : *1 inc, ............ sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (...........)
(G) (H) (I)

You can fill the gaps of the second row of increase with G+1 , H+1 and I+6 :
ROW ......... : *1 inc, ............ sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (...........)

The third row is single crochet-only

ROW ......... : 1 sc in every s (...........)
(G+2) (I+12)

Repeat this three-rows sequence three times for a total of nine rows for the brim. In the rows with increases follow
as an imput the sequence above. They work exactly as the crown increases (paragraph 6), and you will have six more
stitches for every row.
I leave here the last six rows with the gaps to fill with your numbers and an example of it, supposing I ended the
crown at row 12.

ROW ......... : *1 inc, ............ sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (...........)

ROW ......... : *1 inc, ............ sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (...........)
ROW ......... : 1 sc in every s (...........)

ROW ......... : *1 inc, ............ sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (...........)

ROW ......... : *1 inc, ............ sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (...........)
ROW ......... : 1 sc in every s (...........)

EXAMPLE:
ROW 13 : *1 inc, 12 sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (84)
ROW 14 : *1 inc, 13 sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (90)
ROW 15: 1 sc in every s (90)
ROW 16 : *1 inc, 14 sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (96)
ROW 17 : *1 inc, 15 sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (102)
ROW 18: 1 sc in every s (102)
ROW 19 : *1 inc, 14 sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (108)
ROW 20 : *1 inc, 15 sc* , repeat * - * 6 times (114)
ROW 21 : 1 sc in every s (114)

9. Final touches
When you finish the last row of the brim you can break the yarn. You will end with an invisible seam. With a yarn
needle go through the next stitch from back to front and then go through the front loop only from back to front,
considering as front the working side.
Hide your tail between stitches in the back of your work. Hide the tail from the start of the work.
Your rafia hat is all done and ready to follow you during your summer adventures :)
I can't wait to see pictures of all your projects and if you want to support me, you can follow me on socials, and
maybe think of buying your next yarn/supplies on Tricot Cafè online store using code ISABELLCROCHET10 .
Till next time, ciao <3
