Size 8 knitting needles
Cable needle
Wooden handles with slots to attach bag.
Optional: 1 fat quarter of fabric for lining.
otes:
RT: Right Twist Cable: Knit the third stitch from left hand needle. This stitch will remain on
the left hand needle until the first two stitches are knitted. Knit the first stitch on the left hand
needle, remove and knit the next stitch on the needle. Remove it and the remains of the third
stitch. A three stitch right twist cable is created.
LT: Left Twist Cable: Slide the first three stitches to a cable needle and hold these stitches in
front of your work. Knit the next three stitches on the left hand needle. Now knit the three
stitches from the cable needle. Left twist 6 stitch cable is created.
M1: Make one. Draw up the bar between the stitches on the left and right hand needles and
place it on the left hand needle. Knit in the back of this stitch, creating a single increase. This
is also done with purl stitches by purling in the front of the stitch.
Slip 1 purl-wise the beginning of each row. Directions are charted. Read charts from the bot-
tom up and from right to left.
Decrease: Knit 2 together, when knitting OR purl 2 together, when purling.
Begin Bag Front: Cast on 32 stitches.
Hem: Work in stockinette stitch for 9 rows. End with a knit row. Row 10: Knit.
Begin Chart A, Front: It may be helpful to use markers to separate the 6 stitches on either
side of cabled area on the chart. Make one stitch three stitches from edges on each side of rows
5, 11, 17, 23, 29, 35, 41, as you continue through row 45. Row 46: Slip 1, knit across.
At the same time: In addition to the increases you make on row 5 and row 17, increase 2 purls
as follows. Make one purl stitch between the first set of purls and the last set of purls as indi-
cated on chart A Front. Also on row 17 make one purl between the second and third sets of
purls as indicated on chart A Front.

Bottom of Bag:
1. *Slip 1, K1*, repeat between * * to end of row.
2. Slip 1, purl to end of row.
3. Repeat rows 1-2 for a total of 27 rows, ending with row 1.
Slip 1, knit across.
Back of Bag: Follow the chart B Back decreasing one stitch three stitches from edge on each
side on cable rows, remembering to decrease the purl stitches as shown on rows 29 and 41 on
chart.
Next row: Slip 1, knit across.
Back of bag hem: Knit 8 rows of stockinette stitch and bind off. Lay out and block the bag.
Be sure that the hems are not wider than the slit in the handles.
After blocking cut out the lining of your bag. When cutting the lining, add 1/2 inch to the out-
line of the bag for seam allowances. Set lining aside until the bag sides are finished.
Bag Side: Pick up and knit the 13 stitches across the bottom of the bag with the right side fac-
ing. Also pick up and place on two separate needles 18 slipped stitches from the front and 18
slipped stitches from the back of the bag starting at the bottom.
1. Slip 1, P8, slip 1, P1 from the side and pass the slipped stitch over (psso). Turn.
2. Slip 1, K8, slip 1, K1 from the side, psso. Turn.
Continue until all 18 stitches picked up on the front and back edges are gone and bind off on
right side. Repeat this process for the opposite side. Bag sides and seams are completed.
Neatly hide all ends.
Finishing: Cut 2 pieces of lining to match the bag sides remembering to include the seam al-
lowance. Sew lining. Attach the lining to the bag.
It is helpful to have a sturdy bottom to the bag. You can use covered cardboard or plastic can-
vas found in the craft stores. Slide the hem through the handle slits and sew down. Two pieces
of plastic canvas were used in this bag for the bottom.
