Types of computers
1) Desktop computer;
Such computers are used in homes, offices.
They are big in size.
They are kept on a desk/table (that’s why they are called desktops).
They work on electricity.
2) Laptop;
This is a computer that sits on the top of your laps. (That’s why it’s
called a laptop).
It is light and small in size (looks like a brief case so it can be folded
along its hinge for carrying).
It can be carried a round easily while travelling.
It works on battery
3) Tablet: is a small computer.
It is smaller than a laptop but bigger than a smart phone.
It looks like a textbook.
It has a touch screen.
It works by tapping/touching/swiping the screen using fingers or a
stylus. Swiping means moving/sliding a figure across a screen.
It can be carried while travelling.
It works on battery.
4) Smartphone: is a mobile phone. It is smaller than a tablet and
can fit in your hands or pockets. It lets us make phone calls, send
and receive messages, and keep/store contacts.
It works by tapping/touching/swiping the screen using fingers. It can be

5) Smart watches
This is a wearable computer in form of a watch.
It is small in size and worn around the wrist.it lets us know the time
and date.

6) Calculator
Is a small hand-held computer that performs mathematical calculations
/solves sums so fact.
It works by tapping on the buttons using fingers.

1. COMPUTER LABORATORY RULES AND REGULATIONS.
Computer: is a man-made machine that processes information.
Laboratory: is a room where computers are kept and where learning
activities about a computer take place.
Lab: is a short form for Laboratory.
Rules: is a direction/instruction/something you must follow in order to
keep you and others safe. Rules are guidelines for how people should
behave. They are based on ideas of what is wrong or right.
Regulation: is a guideline that must be followed.
Computer laboratory (Lab)
This is a place where we find computers and children go to learn about
them. There are also other things found in the computer laboratory like
fans, carpet etc.
Computer laboratory rules and regulations:
These are instructions/directions that must be followed by pupils while
they are in the computer laboratory.
COMPUTER LABORATORY RULES.
Walk in the queue silently and enter the computer Laboratory.

2. Raise your hand for permission to talk or leave your seat.
3. Do not touch anything until instructed.
4. No one is allowed to carry anything from the laboratory without
permission
from the Teacher.
5. No eating and drinking from the laboratory. All foods and drinks
should be left behind while going to the Computer laboratory.
6. No making of noise in the computer Laboratory/Room at any time.
7. Sharp cutting and piercing objects are not allowed in the computer
laboratory.
8. The Laboratory is out of Bounds for pupils when it is not time for
Computer Lessons.
9. No printing of any kind is allowed to be done from the Laboratory. All
documents must be printed from the Secretary’s office.
10. Keep the Computer Laboratory the way you found it. No

3. Characteristics of computers.
Speed; computers are able to process data very fast at a rate of
millions instructions per second. Different calculations that would take
days and days to find solutions can be completed within seconds.
Accuracy: computers provide a high degree of accuracy without any
errors like humans do. They error free once given the right
instructions.
Diligence: a computer can be used for a longer time without getting
tired or fatigued.
Versatility: a computer can perform different tasks with the same ease
and so it cannot do any work without instructions from the user.
Storage capability; computers are able to store any amount of work
given to it.

6. HOW TO SWITCH ON AND OFF A COMPUTER
a) How to switch on a computer
i. Make sure the computer is connected to a power source
ii. Check whether all computer components are connected
together.
iii. Press the power button of a monitor.
iv. Switch on the power button on the system unit.
v. Be patient and wait for the computer to start(boot)
vi. Give the password and username if asked.
b) How to switch off a computer
i. On the monitor click at start
ii. Select shutdown
iii. Confirm that you want to shut down and click ok
iv. Turn off the monitor and switch off the power source
c) HOW TO USE A MOUSE
The mouse and its buttons
A mouse is a hand held input device that helps us to interact with the
computer
A typical mouse has two buttons. It has the left and right mouse with a scroll
wheel between the buttons.

Key Function
Alt (alternate) This is a second control key
Arrow key Used to move the cursor through a document i.e. up,
down, left, right
Arrow keys used with shift are used to highlight text
Backspace Deletes characters backward from the position of the
cursor
Caps lock Change letters from capital to small and vice versa when
pressed
Ctrl (control) Used with other key to activate a command or operation
Delete Used to delete letters forwards in front of the cursor
Enter Used to enter commands
Used to move the cursor to the next line
Function Have different meanings depending on the software
running
Shift Used to execute the mathematical and punctuation signs
Escape Used to move away from the current program
Space Used to space letters, pictures, words etc.

THE PAINT PROGRAMME.
MS Paint is a program that is used to draw,
colour and edit pictures freely. This program
can be in colour mode or in black and white
mode
THE PAINT WINDOW.
1. Title bar.
This bar is placed at the left side top corner. Which is used to close,
minimize or maximize the paint window.
2. Menu bar: This is below the title bar and it has the tabs like files,
home and view.
3. Scroll bar: It contains two types of bar, namely vertical bar and
horizontal bar.
4. The Status Bar contains various items including help tips, the progress
bar, and information about the mouse pointer and the current image.
OPENING THE PAINT “PROGRAMME”
STEPS TO FOLLOW.
1. Go to start
2. Click on all programs
3. Look for the word “Paint”
4. Click on it.
5. A paint window will open.
When the program opens, it looks like this

HOW TO DRAW SHAPES
STEPS:
1. HOLD THE MOUSE
2. MOVE AND POINT TO ANY SHAPE OF YOUR CHOICE.
3. CLICK ON THE SHAPE.
4. MOVE THE MOUSE BACK IN THE WHITE SPACE.
TO DRAW THE SHAPE.
1. HOLD DOWN THE LEFT MOUSE BUTTON AND DON’T REMOVE YOUR
FINGER.
2. MOVE THE MOUSE TO DRAW THE SHAPE UP TO THE SIZE YOU WANT.
3. AFTER GETTING THE SIZE YOU WANT RELEASE THE MOUSE BUTTON.
HOW TO COLOUR SHAPES.
STEPS.
1. CLICK ON THE SHAPE YOU WANT TO COLOUR.
2. MOVE YOUR MOUSE TO THE BUCKET UNDER “TOOLS”
3. CLICK ON THE BUCKET.
4. MOVE YOUR CURSOR BACK TO THE SHAPE.
5. CLICK ON IT.
6. THE COLOUR ON THE BUCKET WILL FILL THE SHAPE.
7. TO REMOVE THE COLOURING, MOVE BACK TO “TOOLS” AND CLICK ON
“LETTER A” FOR TEXT.
