G R AT I TU DE
a semi circular shawl or scarf
© Gratitude. I am grateful.
Thanks to a dear knitting friend I was given
opportunities I couldn’t have dreamed of without her.
This pattern is for Sandy. Thank you
Materials:
Yarn and needle: This shawl is knitted on 2,5-3,5 mm depending on how beautiful your stitch is. Or bigger if
you want it chunky. The stitch is to be well defined and not fuzzy. I made a little scarf on 2,5mm in Madeline-
tosh Merino Light in the smaller size of the pattern. I needed 48 grams and 185 meters.
For the larger size I used Cash Sock from Gepard. I used 61 grams or 250 meters.
It is supposed to be a little neckwarmer, almost pretending to be jewellery.
Other tools: Cable needle for the cabling and a tapestry needle to weave in ends.
Gauge and construction:
Don’t fuss about gauge, but choose needles and yarn that your hands are comfortable with. Since the shawl
ends in a stockinette section, it’s important you like the fabric your hands is producing.
This shawl starts with a long leaf pattern edge strip. You then pick up the long edge and shape a crescent
shawl using short rows and stockinette stitch.
Reading instruction:
The diagrams are read from right to left on RS rows (odd numbered rows)
and from left to right on WS rows (even numbered rows).
Directions:
Cast on 15 sts using the lace cast on method.
Setup row 1: K1tbl, K8, P1, K5
Setup row 2: Sl1 purlwise wyif, P3, K2, pm, P8, Sl 1 purlwise wyif
Rows 3 - 392: Work diagram A over the first 9 sts and diagram B over the remaining sts.
(The marker is placed between the two diagrams - shown as a red line)
Continue until you have repeated diagram B 27 (34) times (27 (34) edge leaves completed).
Now work diagram C instead of diagram B for one repeat (last leaf).
On the last row - continue casting off all sts until one loop is left on your needle. Do not break yarn.
(NOTE! The diagrams “limp”! Diagram A has a 6 row repeat. Diagram B and C have 14 rows!
After 3 repeats of diagram B, the two halves of the edge diagram should line up again. The repeat of each
diagram is circled in red)
Stockinette/ short row section:
Turn the work 90 degrees and pick up 196 (245) sts (one under each edge st) along the whole edge strip
from WS (197 (246) sts on needle)
From RS: knit 102 (126) m - turn work
From WS: P7 - turn work
*(RS) Knit until 1st before the gap caused by last turn, ssk (close the gap), K3 - turn work
(WS) Purl until 1st before the gap caused by last turn, p2tog (close the gap), P3 - turn work*
Repeat *-* until you K all 197 (246) sts in one RS row.
K 1 row from WS.
Bind off all sts from RS using single crochet bind off.
