the toe (or heel), before turning and then doing the same on
the other side. This continues until around 1/3 of the
stitches have been worked as short rows on each side,
turning on every row. This is the end of stage one.
After this we begin to reverse the direction, starting on the
last stitch that was turned, and working out on each side so
that we have worked as many short rows as we did in stage
one. As you are working a double set of short rows, one
sitting on top of another, you will have two sets of yarn overs to
work with the stitches as you begin working stage two.
Step 1:
Knit to turning point. On the first row, this is the last stitch.
In subsequent rows, you will knit to the ‘double stitch’ before
you turn.
Step 4:
Turn your work to the knit side and bring yarn to the front
of work.
Step 2:
Turn your work to the purl side. Bring yarn to back of work
and begin working a purl row. As the yarn is brought to front
of work in order to work a purl row you will create a yarn
over loop in front of the first stitch. (Note: This yarn over loop is
mounted backwards but this will be corrected later.) This creates our As you begin to knit the yarn is brought to the back of the

stitch, which is our ‘double stitch’.
