HydroShield Pro:

A Cost-Efficient Home Flood Defense

System for the Filipinos

Christian Faith Colis

Introduction
Problem Statement
The Philippines ranks as the 8th most affected country by
extreme weather events according to the Global Climate
Risk Index (2021). Over 20 tropical cyclones enter the
Philippines every year, with 5-7 making landfall, resulting
in widespread flooding.
Flooding causes an average of ₱39.2 billion in damages
annually, impacting 2.3 million households, particularly in
low-lying and coastal regions.

Problem Solution
HydroShield, a modular and cost-efficient flood barrier
system, designed with a rubber inflatable underlayer and
integrated pump to protect homes and remove internal
floodwater quickly and effectively.

households.

Specific Objectives
a. Develop a modular barrier system using
affordable materials like bamboo or PVC.
b. Incorporate an inflatable rubber underlayer to
prevent water seepage.
c. Install a water pump to remove floodwater that
enters the home.
d. Field test the system’s effectiveness and
usability in flood-prone areas.

Components

HydroShield Protoype
Modular Frame: Easily assembled with bamboo
or PVC pipes, requiring no advanced tools.
Design ensures strength to withstand up to 1.5
meters of water pressure.
Inflatable Rubber Underlayer: Fills gaps and
forms a tight seal on uneven surfaces,
preventing seepage. Tested for deployment
within 10 minutes.
Pump System: Pumps up to 80 liters per minute,
clearing floodwater from inside homes quickly.
Expected
Results

Waterproof Efficiency: The system will prevent up to 95% of

floodwater from entering homes through base gaps.
Pump Efficiency: Pumps are capable of removing 80 liters of
water per minute, preventing significant internal flooding.
Cost Efficiency: The total cost of HydroShield Pro is expected to
be around ₱15,000, compared to industrial solutions costing
upwards of ₱100,000.
Usability: Field tests indicate that 2 people can deploy the system
in less than 30 minutes, making it practical for households.
Conclusion
HydroShield Pro offers a comprehensive, cost-effective flood defense system designed
for Filipino households. It integrates local materials with innovative technology,
providing an affordable solution to a critical problem.
This system can be deployed quickly, is easy to maintain, and can help protect
thousands of homes during the typhoon season.

Call to Action: Support from government agencies, NGOs, and local leaders is essential to fund
large-scale testing and community-based rollout in flood-prone areas.
