Current Drive TM3100


Characterization

TM3100 is a driver IC designed for LED display panel. It features built-in CMOS shift register and
latch that can convert serial input data into parallel output data. TM3100 has 16 current sources that
can provide 5 ~ 35mA constant current at each output port to drive LEDs. Each OUT driver channel
output, if shorted circuited, will output greater current, and environment changes hardly affect its
output current. Besides, users may use external resistors of different resistance values (REXT) to
adjust the current at each output of TM3100, therefore, they can accurately control LED brightness,
because of which, the device is applicable to display driver module of high-quality white balance. This
product is excellent and reliable quality.

Output enable control port. Wheen OE is low, OUT0 ~ OUT15 are enabled.

pull-up resistor to VDD.
This is where users set constant current of OUT0 ~ OUT15. An external resistor

may be connected bwteeen GND and it.
This port outputs serial data at rising edge of the CLK. It may be connected to the
SDO 22 O

Application Information

As shown below, the output current (IOUT) may be adjusted with an external resistor (Rext). The
following formula will help calculate the output current value:

wherein Riref refers to the resistance of R-EXT. When the resistance value is 600Ω, it can be
calculated by the formula that the output current value is 30mA; when the resistance value is 1KΩ,
the output current is 18mA.

Different resistance between R-EXT and GND will give different constant current at the OUT
pin, but the voltage at the turning point of constant current varies with constant current. As shown
by the figure, constant current voltage point ≈0.8V when the constant current is 30mA, and it drops
to ≈0.5V when the constant current is 15mA. The voltage drop at OUTx should be taken into full
consideration in the design of the circuit for fear the drive current is below the pre-set value.
In addition, when they are on, it is not appropriate for the OUTx pins work with a high voltage
drop for a long time, because this would increase power dissipation produce a lot of heat on the
chip, and affect system performance and stability.
In practical application, electromagnetic interference may result from signal traces or other
factors. To avoid such faults, it is recommended that TM3100 module should be placed as close as
possible to the LED display module.
