LESSON 15:

Companions of the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬

ZAYD IBN THABIT RA

Zayd ibn Thabit RA was from Madinah and an Ansaar( helper). He

RA was approximately 11 years old when Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬made Hijra to

Madinah.

He RA was an orphan and accepted Islam along with his family, as

soon as Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬made Hijra. Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬had made a dua of

goodness for Zayd ibn Thabit RA.

HIS ZEAL TO PARTICIPATE IN BATTLES

Zayd ibn Thabit RA was only 13 years when Muslims were preparing
for the battle of Badr. He RA along with some other youth of his age

went up to Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬and expressed their desire to take part in the

battle.

Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬told him that he RA cannot participate in the battle as

he was very young. He RA was very upset on hearing this. His mother
RA felt equally disappointed as him.

Zayd ibn Thabit RA couldn't participate in the battle of Uhud, for

the same reason.
 He RA, later participated in battles of Tabuk, Battle of Trench and
many more.

HIS PROFICIENCY IN LEARNING

Zayd ibn Thabit RA expressed his desire to serve for Islam, to his
mother RA. His mother advised him to learn and memorize the holy
Quran as much as possible till he gets of age to participate in the
battles.

When Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬returned from the battle of Uhud, Zayd ibn

Thabit RA and his mother RA met him(‫)ﷺ‬. She RA told to

Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬that her son, reads and writes very well and he had
memorized 17 Surahs of the holy Quran.

Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬test him RA. Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬was very much pleased

and he(‫ )ﷺ‬felt that Zayd's RA ability exceeded the commendation

given by his mother .

Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬asked him to learn Hebrew as he(‫ )ﷺ‬wanted

someone trustworthy to act as a translator between him(‫ )ﷺ‬and the

Jews .

Incredibly, he RA mastered the Hebrew language in two weeks.

Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬used to ask him to write letters to Jews.

Then Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬told him to learn another language Syriac,

which is a dialect of Aramaic. He RA mastered that language in 17 days.

Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬told him that whoever learns any language, he would

be protected by the people of that language. Learning languages is

some of the teachings of Prophet(‫)ﷺ‬.

RECORDING THE DIVINE REVELATIONS

Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬chose him RA to record the revelations from then on.

So whenever any part of the Quran was revealed to the Prophet(‫)ﷺ‬,

he would sent for Zayd RA and asked him to write it down.

Zayd RA was called "Kaathibu Wahyi of Prophet(‫ ")ﷺ‬meaning

Person who writes the revelation which comes to Prophet(‫)ﷺ‬.

COMPILATION OF QURAN AND SERVICE TO ISLAM

After the death of Prophet(‫)ﷺ‬, Zayd RA was one of the first from
among the Ansar RA, who stretched his hand and pledged allegiance to
Abu Bakr RA.
 During the Caliphate of Abu Bakr RA, it was decided to collect the
Quran in one manuscript. This responsibility was handed over to Zayd
RA and he RA completed the task with meticulousness.

During the Caliphate of Uthman RA, Uthman RA summoned Zayd

ibn Thabit RA and some other competent companions to make accurate
copies of the manuscript of Quran. Zayd RA completed this task also
with same thoroughness.

He RA was known as to be among the one who have most

knowledge of the Quran.

Once when Zayd ibn Thabit RA mounted his horse, Abdullah ibn

Abbas, the cousin of Prophet(‫)ﷺ‬, held the reins of the horse and
started walking.

When asked why he was doing like that, he RA told that, "This is how
we are taught to respect our scholars." Hearing this Zayd ibn Thabit RA
kissed the hand of Abdullah Ibn Abass and said, "This is how we are
taught to respect Ahl al bayt al Nabi."

He RA had immense knowledge regarding the Laws of Inheritance

so much so that there are four Laws of Inheritance which are referred as
Az Zaydiyath al Arbah.

At the time of the death of Abu Bakr RA, he RA called Zayd ibn
Thabit RA to write the name of Umar ibn Khattab RA as the successor .

HIS DEATH
 Zayd ibn Thabit RA passed away at the time of Mu'awiyah bin Abu
Sufyan RA.

Abdullah ibn Abbas RA cried and said, "Today, with the burial of
Zayd ibn Thabit RA, we have also buried so much of the knowledge

given by Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬to us."

HAMZAH IBN ABDUL MUTALLIB RA

(THE LION OF ALLAH AND THE LEADER OF ALL MARTYRS )

Hamzah ibn Abdul Mutallib RA was the uncle of Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬and

he RA was only two years older than Prophet(‫)ﷺ‬.

He RA was good looking, brave , well built, well respected and loved
hunting very much.

Hamzah RA was very close to Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬and he knew that

Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬was very noble in his character. When Khadija bint

Khuwaylid RA proposed to marry Prophet(‫)ﷺ‬, it was Hamzah RA who

went with Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬to get him married to her.

Hamzah RA was the foster brother of Prophet(‫)ﷺ‬, which means

they were nursed by the same women , Suwaibah, the slave girl of Abu
Lahab.

ACCEPTANCE OF ISLAM

When Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬called his family to turn to Islam, Hamzah RA

didn't accept initially. But he RA never harmed Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬.

One day when He RA was returning from his hunting trips, he was
informed by a slave girl about the abuse Abu Jahl had inflicted upon

Prophet ‫ﷺ‬.

Hamzah RA went to Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬and asked "Did anyone see this,

when this happened?". Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬replied that it happened in

public.

So He RA rushed to where Abu Jahal was seated in a crowd and

beat him up badly.

He RA said, “How can you abuse Muhammad(‫ )ﷺ‬when I am one

of His(‫ )ﷺ‬followers and I utter what He(‫ )ﷺ‬says , I bear witness

there is none worthy of worship besides Allah and Muhammad(‫ )ﷺ‬is

definitely His messenger."

The degree in which he RA wanted to defend Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬made

him say that he RA was Prophet's(‫ )ﷺ‬follower. So the kuffar of

Quraysh were very shocked, Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬and muslimeen were very

happy.

EMPOWERMENT OF MUSLIMS

After he RA accepted Islam, he used to stand guard at the door of Al

Arqam RA.

When Umar bin Khattab RA came to the house of Al Arqam RA to

accept Islam, Hamzah RA made dua to Allah asking, "If this man intends
goodness let him accept Islam and if He intends anything else make it
easy for us to overpower him."

After Umar ibn Khattab RA accepted Islam, both Hamza RA and

Umar RA took the muslimeen to the Kaʼbah to engage in tawaf and
Salah.

They made two rows of people , head of one row was Umar ibn
Khattab RA and head of other was Hamzah RA. The kuffar of Quraysh
realised that Muslims had become a force to reckon with.

HIS CHALLENGE TO KUFFAR BEFORE HIJRA

At the time of Hijra, the kuffar of Quraysh used to follow those who
were doing Hijra and harm them on the path.

Hamzah RA was among those who(the others were Umar ibn

Khattab RA and Talha ibn Ubaidullah RA), when they made hijra to
Madina, stood before the Kaʼbah and told the Quraysh, "I am going to
do Hijra, if you dare, try to harm me."

BATTLE OF BADR

Hamzah RA used to wear a red feather of an ostrich on his chest

armour. That was supposed to be a sign of bravery, telling the kuffar of
Quraysh “You want to harm , come , come and try with me".

Hamzah RA was the bravest of the lot, He RA was known as “Asad

Allah” and “Asad ur Rasool Allah ‫ "ﷺ‬because he RA was always at

the defence.

The battle started with Duel .Three from Quraysh and three from
Muslim army(Hamzah RA, Ali RA and Ubaydah ibn al-Harith RA) came
out. All the 3 muslims were victorious Alhamdulillah.

After that a ferocious battle took place. It ended with the defeat of
Quraysh. The Quraysh were counting their losses and noticed that
Hamzah RA was the strongest of the lot. So they decided to mark
Hamzah RA in the next battle.

BATTLE OF UHUD

During the battle of Uhud, the Quraysh had brought an Abyssinian

slave Wahshi ibn Harb, who could throw spears and never missed his
targets.

The Quraysh told him that if he could kill Hamzah RA with one throw,
he would bbe set free. Wahshi didn't wanted to kill Hamzah RA, but to
get his freedom he threw his spear and
Hamzah RA was martyred. His body was mutilated by the enemies.

VERSES REVEALED TO BE PATIENT

After the battle, Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬was looking at the bodies of the

Martyrs and he(‫ )ﷺ‬cried profusely when he(‫ )ﷺ‬saw what had
happened to the body of Hamzah RA.

In this intense emotional state, Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬told "Wallahi, I am

going to seek revenge by executing 70 of those people". Prophet ‫ﷺ‬

gave the compensation and broke this promise after the verses were
revealed.

Allah revealed the following verses. Surah An-Nahl 126-7 “And if you
punish [an enemy, O believers], punish with an equivalent of that with
which you were harmed. But if you are patient – it is better for those
who are patient, 127 : And be patient, [O Muhammad], and your
patience is not but through Allah."

The sister of Hamzah RA; Safiyyah bint ‘Abd al-Muttalib RA gave two
pieces of cloth to shroud Hamzah RA. But one of these was given to
another companion who was martyred in a similar manner as Hamza
RA.

When the Sahabah RA covered Hamzah's RA face with the shroud ,

his legs were showing and when they covered the legs, the face was
showing. So Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬covered his face with the cloth and covered
his feet with a green branch and he RA was buried.

Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬was grief-stricken and during the Salatul Janazah of

Hamzah RA, Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬did the takbeer more than the usual
number of times.

May Allah swt be pleased with the man known as Asad Allah &
Sayyidush-Shuhada Aameen.
