Mitten
Edge
Cast on 34 (38) stitches with the main color on needle size 8 (5 mm). Knit 9 rounds of
two-colored stockinette stitch like this:

Keep both yarns over your index finger just like you would do when knitting with 1 color. The
bright contrasting color (dominant color) is placed closest to the back of your hand and the
main color is placed closest to the fingertip.
This makes the contrasting color appear wider than the main color. It sounds crazy, but it is
true.
NOTE: If you knit bright-colored mittens, you will have to knit the dark color as the dominant
one.
Mitten
Fasten off the contrasting color and continue with the main color.

Note: When knitting with 1 color, the knitting gauge changes a bit and the knitted item
becomes a bit looser than previously. So continue with the same amount of stitches as
before.

Knit 8 (10) rounds of stockinette stitch. Knit up to the beginning of the round. Now, start
increasing for the thumb.

Thumb, right mitten

1. round: yarn over, k1, yarn over. Work stockinette stitch around.
2. round: knit stockinette stitch and knit the yarn over through the back loops.
3. round: Yarn over, k3,yarn over. Work stockinette stitch around.

Increase like this until you have 9 (11) stitches for the thumb.

Thumb, left mitten

As opposed to the right thumb, the left thumb is knitted at the end of the round.
1. round: Work stockinette stitch until you have 1 stitch left on the round, yarn over,
k1, yarn over.
2. round: Work stockinette stitch and work the yarn over through the back loops.
3. round: Work stockinette stitch until you have 3 stitches left on the round, yarn over,
k1, yarn over.
Increase like this until you have 9 (11) stitches for the thumb.

Hand, both mittens
Place the new stitches for the thumb on a thread and let them rest while finishing the rest of
the mitten.

Cast on 2 new stitches over the resting thumb stitches = 36 (40) stitches. Knit in the round in
stockinette stitch until your work measures approx. 8.3 (8.7) inches (21 (22) cm).
Place a marker at the beginning of the round and again after 18 (20) stitches.

Decrease on each side of the marker, but only every 2nd round.

Decrease by working the first 2 stitches of the round together, work until 2 stitches before the
marker, work 2 knit stitches together through the back loops, work 2 stitches together
knitwise, work until 2 stitches before the marker, work 2 knit stitches together through the
back loops. You are decreasing with 4 stitches in this round.

By alternating between working knit stitches and working knit stitches through the back loops
together, the decreases lean against each other and create a pretty edge.
Decrease until you have 6 (8) stitches.

Fasten off and pull the yarn through the stitches.

Thumb
Work 5 stitches up along the hole for the thumb and work in the round in stockinette stitch
over the 14 (16) stitches. Work until the thumb measures 1.8 (1.96) inches (4.5 (5) cm) from
the newly collected stitches (the ones you put on hold). Knit the stitches together 2 and 2.
Work 1 round of knit stitches. Fasten off and pull the yarn through the remaining stitches.

Weave in all ends and enjoy your new mittens on chilly days.

Happy knitting :)
