                                            why I was delightfully wafted back to my youth with the choice
                                            of acts put together by director David Ball and producer Peter
                                            Scarlett for the 2010 Magic Circle Christmas Show, again a

                                               The youth section of the Circle has introduced some excellent
                                            talent to the club, personified by 16-year-old Stephen Williams.
                                            Slim, dressed formally in tails and presenting classic magic
                                            including candles, doves, silks, he gave a very good presentation
                                            of the floating table with a member of the audience, and
                                            finished with a spectacular snowstorm effect. Don’t knock the
                                            classics as old-fashioned; performed well, as we saw here, they
                                            are as pleasing to the audience as they’ve always been.
                                               A rush of pink coloured feathers and silk poured onto the
                                            stage wrapped around Romany, a young woman who has
                                            proved in the last few years that she is going places. A great
                                            personality, she engages and flirts with the audience and has a
                                            quality of magic that has won her many awards including the
                                            Magic Circle Stage Magician of the Year. Dressed like a
                                            Marlene Dietrich saloon bar girl, her magic is excellent with
                                            bird cage productions, Gypsy thread, a brief linking ring
                                            routine with a silk (and a stunning vanish of the ring), a card
                                            effect and a rope routine with a member of the audience,
                                            during which she steals and dons his jacket under the tied
                                            ropes. Romany is about to enter some international
                                            competitions including FISM and I predict success.
                                               An interval followed with under-your-nose magic from
                                            Michael Carr, Dennis Patten, Alan Maskell and Chris Wood,
                                            then it was back to the theatre with more variety –
                                            ventriloquism. Gone are the days of a cheeky boy sitting on his
                                            master’s knee with verbal conflict. Today’s vents includes a
                                            parade of very mobile characters, ranging from a grumpy old
                                            man to a baby, and a “thing” called Elmo, all presented by
                                            Steve Hewlett. It’s not that his vent technique is not good, but
                                            the characterisation of the figures and the scripts nowadays
                                            are so good you never look at the vent’s lips. This was a very
                                            modern, professional and entertaining act.
