From Principal’s Desk

“The highest education is that which does not merely give us

infmation but makes our life in harmony with all existence.”
Rabindranath Tage

Education stands as the most potent tool for transforming society. Here at GC
Chamba, we are committed to delivering top-tier education that inspires and empowers our
students to become lifelong learners and valuable contributors to society. For us, education
transcends mere information absorption; it's about tailoring our approach to meet the diverse
needs of our community. Our institution emphasizes both academic pursuits and
extracurricular activities, striking a balance that nurtures well-rounded individuals. With a
faculty comprising seasoned experts and dynamic educators, we boast a formidable academic
backbone. Our dedicated and highly qualified instructors foster an environment conducive to
research and critical thinking in the classroom. Moreover, I take immense pride in the enduring
values instilled in our students through our pursuit of excellence, underpinned by compassion
and a profound sense of social responsibility.
GC Chamba doesn't solely concentrate on academic course work encompassing
Arts, Science, and Commerce; it also plays a pivotal role in fostering personal growth and
confidence-building among students. The cornerstone of a reputable institution lies in its
highly qualified and dedicated faculty, alongside excellent infrastructure, a well-stocked and
up-to-date library, world-class sports facilities, innovative teaching methodologies, and a
robust career guidance and placement cell—all of which are readily available at our college.
Additionally, the college emphasizes skill-based education through the introduction of self-
financed courses such as BCA, BBA, PGDCA, and B.Voc. in Hotel Tourism and Retail
Management.
As we anticipate the forthcoming implementation of the NEP in our state, we
recognize both the imminent changes in structure and curriculum, and the opportunity they
present for students to engage with new and practical learning experiences. The NEP
underscores the importance of skill development alongside an interdisciplinary and multi
disciplinary approach. While its implementation poses challenges for educational institutions
and stakeholders alike, confronting challenges is intrinsic to our educational ethos.
I am honored to extend a warm welcome to students, inviting them into an
environment where they can fully explore and realize their potential and talents. The learning
journey offered here not only enriches students but also empowers them to contribute
meaningfully to the betterment and upliftment of society.

1. About Government Degree College Chamba
Geographically, Chamba is bounded on north-West by Jammu and Kashmir, on the North-East and
East by Ladakh area of Jammu and Kashmir State and Lahaul and Bara-Bhangal area of Himachal
Pradesh, on the south-east and south by the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh and Gurdaspur district
of Punjab. In circa 500 AD, a legendary hero called Maru, migrated to north-west from Kalpagram (a
mythical place from where majority of the Rajput dynasties claim their descent) and founded
Brahampura (Bharmour) in the valley of the Budhal River, seventy five kilometer to the east of present
Chamba town. His successors continued to rule over the country from that capital city for over three
hundred years until Sahil Verman shifted his capital from Brahampura to the more centrally located
plateau in the lower Ravi Valley. He named the town after his beloved daughter Champa. His Rani
voluntarily offered herself a sacrifice to bring water for the town’s people through a running channel
originating from a place called Maloona. The layout of Chamba seems to be in conformity with the
ancient texts. From this period onward, the Rajas of Chamba continued to rule in an uninterrupted and
direct line of descent.

The Chamba town is situated at a distance of about 28 Km, 54 Km and 120 Km respectively from
Khajjiar the 'Mini Switzerland' of India, Dalhousie a world-famous tourist place and Pathankot (the
nearest railway station). The nearest airport is Kangra airport located at Gaggal which is 116 km from
Chamba. In the field or education, the mile stone was achieved when the college was established by
the Government of Himachal Pradesh on 15th May, 1958 as a co-educational institution in the historical
Akhand Chandi Palace of Chamba (hereinafter first campus). The college is perched near the foot of
gentle slopping valley overlooking Chowgan a big rectangular ground and the hub of various activities.
It holds a majestic picturesque view in the densely populated Chamba town.

The Govt. Degree College Chamba was Re-accredited with Grade “B++” by NAAC in August, 2022.
The college has been continuously paving ahead under the patronage of the Government of Himachal
Pradesh with creative team of 65 faculty members and 4205 students enrolled in undergraduate and
post-graduation programs in the session 2023-24. The college is fully financed by the Government of
Himachal Pradesh and is recognized by University Grants Commission (hereinafter UGC), New Delhi
under section 2(f) and 12B of UGC act 1956. The college is affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University,
Shimla and has switched to Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) for Under Graduate classes from
academic session 2013-14 under the guidelines of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA).

The college is recognized as District Green Champion in Chamba District by the Mahatma
Gandhi National Council of Rural Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India for the
academic year 2020-21 and also a participating institute in Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0 of Ministry of

The first campus of the college is situated in historical Chamba town, which is on the right bank
of rippling ancient Iravati River (presently Ravi). In the year 2015, after 57 glorious years of service
to the society from the first campus, the second campus of the college was established at Sultanpur
which is about four (4) km from the first campus. At present, the second campus is functioning as main
administrative unit and it is the campus for regular graduation programs.

The college has two (2) ST hostels for boys and one SC hostel for boys at Mohalla Jansali, near
government ITI Chamba and situated at distance of 500 meters from the first campus. The first ST
hostel has well-furnished 08 rooms with capacity of 24 residents, one common room, one mess,
washrooms and hostel-warden accommodation. The second ST hostel was established in the year July
2009 having well-furnished 22 rooms with capacity of 60 residents, one guest room, one common
room, one office, one mess, washrooms and hostel-warden accommodation whereas the second ST
hostel is having capacity of 83 residents.

15. Add-on Programs

In the globalized job, market requires vocationally and professionally oriented Add-on programmes
along with traditional graduation degrees. By keeping this requirement into consideration, UGC has
decided to prepare Indian universities and affiliated colleges for Add-on programmes through the
regulation in 1990s to vocationalize and professionalize undergraduate education during the eighth and
ninth five-year plan periods (1992-97 and 1997-2002). Many professional and vocational institutions
were established in the existing universities and their constituent colleges and introduced vocationally
oriented courses and curricula.
With this vision, the UGC recast the vocationalization Programme at the undergraduate level under a
modified scheme of its Career Orientation Program during the 10th plan period. The new programs,
as envisioned by the UGC, would be a flexible system of certificate/diploma/advanced diploma
programs, which would run in parallel with conventional undergraduate and graduate degrees. The new
initiative was also backed by the knowledge that “administrative” government jobs would decline in
the future and more jobs would be available in the private sector due to economic liberalization.
Keeping in the view the above, Govt. Degree College Chamba is offering students different Add-on
programs which well be notified during regular classes. These courses will be taken up beyond the
routine timetable of the college.

16. Rules for Admission to Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc.)

The UGC has launched a scheme on skill development based job oriented higher education program
as a part of College/University education, leading to Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc.) degree. This
degree Program is unique with the provision of multiple entry and exist at different levels of NSQF
from level 5 to 7, viz. Diploma/Advance Diploma and Degree in compliance to the National Skills
