Materials:
158 – 170 yards (150 -155 m) super bulky yarn – my sample used 3 balls Schulana
'Cortina' in pink to about 6 ft left over
US sz 19 (15 mm) circular needles 16 – 24” (40 – 50 cm) long
Row counter (optional – you should be able to easily tell where you are -only 4
rows in rep)
1 end of round marker (EOR M)
Darning needle
Gauge/Measurements:
Gauge is not critical to piece but roughly 7.5 stitches and 12.5 rows = 4” (10cm)
square in stockinette
End measurement is roughly (pieces has a lot of stretch) when flat and totally
relaxed it is 30” (76 cm) around by 14” (36 cm) tall when pulled tall it will stay at
20” (51 cm), and can be pulled wide (over shoulders) to about 45” (115 cm)
Knowledge/Abbreviations:
CO = Cast on BO = Bind off Rep. = repeat(s) M = marker
EOR = end of round K = knit P = purl patt. = pattern st. = stitch(es)
Notes:
I recommend (but it is not required) using a Long-tail AKA 'Y' Cast on for
smoothness and stretch. ***If using the longtail CO, it will count as your CO AND
the first round of knits as well, so skip the first round of knits that case.
Chart of pattern is also included at end of written directions.
Directions:
Using your US sz 19 (15mm) circulars CO 56 stitches (See notes above)
Making sure there are no twists place M for EOR and join ends to begin working
in round.
Intro rounds (2)
1: Knit to EORM
2: Purl to EORM
Body
Stitch pattern
round 1: knit to EORM
round 2: purl to EORM
round 3: knit to EORM
round 4: * K7, P7 * rep from * to * to EORM
Work the stitch pattern repeat - rounds 1 – 4 above - nine times (or to enough
yarn left for the 4 exit round and BO)
Exit rounds (4 + BO)
R1: Knit to EORM
R2: Purl to EORM
repeat the two rounds above once more
BO knitwise, and remember as always when working in the round after you've
bound off you last stitch pick up and knit one stitch under the BO loop of first
stitch of round, and bind it off with the last BO loop. Cut yarn and pull thru.
Sew in tails. Enjoy your new cowl!
Different look achieved by pulling longways :)
