• ADDRESS BOOK: It is used for the record of email addresses of people.

• ADSL: It stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. It’s a highspeed telephone
connection operated via copper telephone line which is also used for voice calls.

• AJAX: it stands for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. It is an interactive web


programming tool.

• ANCHOR: it’s a coding system which is used to create web pages.

• ANSI: it stands for American National Standards Institute. It provides codes for all
the characters on computer keyboard.

• APACHE: it is the most popular web server software.it runs mainly with UNIX system.

• API: it stands for Application Programming Interface. It enables different computer


programs to communicate with one another.

• ARCHIEVE: they are the stored messages or files which are not immediately needed
but also not completely discarded.

• ASCII: It stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. It provides
codes for all the characters on computer keyboard.

• BBS: it’s an abbreviation for Bulletin Board System.

• BIT: it’s a smallest measurement unit of computer memory.

• BOOT: to load computer system into memory.

• BUG: they are the errors or logical faults in the computer program which causes
malfunction.

• BURNING: it is the process of copying files to CD Row.

• BUS: they are the series of parallel wires to connect CPU with input output devices.

• BYTE: it is a measurement of computer memory. (A byte comprises 8 bits).

• CACHE: it is a memory that is placed between CPU and main memory to provide
faster access to CPU and improve computer utilization. They are also called
temporary access files.

• CAD/CAM: it stands for Computer Aided Design or Computer Aided manufacturing.

• CSS: it stands for Cascading Style Sheets. It’s a feature of HTML which enables a range
of styles for headers, body texts.

• CRT: it stands for Cathode Ray Tube which accelerates electron beams onto the
screen to create the images. (RED GREEN BLUE lights).

• CMS: it’s an abbreviation for Content Management System.

• COMPRESSION: it’s a way to reduce the amount of space required to store data.

• CONVERGENCE: Combination of Radio, Tv, newspaper with computers is known as


Convergence.

• COOKIES: A small text file created by website that is sorted in user’s computer either
temporary for that session only or permanently on hard disk. It provides the way for
websites to recognize you and keep track of your preferences.

• CRASH: it refers to the situation which happens when the software or hardware fails
to work properly.

• CRAWLER/BOT/ROBOT: it’s a program that searches the web for new links, content
and changes to make search engine up to date.

• CURSOR: it is a pointer on screen which is controlled by pointing devices such as


Mouse.

• CYBER VENTING: it means pouring out one’s grievances.

• DBMS: abbreviation for Database Management system.

• DEBUG: it is a program to remove errors (Bugs).

• DVD: it stands for Digital Video Disc or Digital Versatile Disc.

• DIGITIZING: it is the representative of image, sound and documents by generating a


series of number. For example: Binary numbers.

• DITHERING: it is a device which combines dots of primary colors to appear like


intermediate colors.

• DNS: it stands for Domain Name System. It is a naming system for computer services
or other resources connected to the internet. It associates various information with
domain names assigned to each of the participating entities. It translates names to
numerical IP address.

• DOMAIN NAME: it is an identification strength that defines administrative authority


and control within the internet. Example:.com, .ac.in.

• DPI: it stands for Dots Per Inch. These are the number of dots per inch produced by a
printer or scanner.

• FIREWALL: it saves computers from any kind of unauthorized attempts. It works


between computer and your internet connection and keeps an eye on everything. It
is made to protect against hackers.

• FIREWIRE: it is a device to transfer video recording very quickly from one device to
another.

• FIRMWARE: they are the instruction written in any hardware or software device
known as firmware.

• FREEWARE: the software that is distributed free without demanding a fee for its
usage. These are available for unlimited periods of time.

• FLAME: this term is used to describe those language which are rude, sarcastic.

• FLOPPY DISC: it’s a plastic disc which is covered with magnetizable material. Here
data is stored magnetically.

• FTP: it stands for File Transfer Protocol. It helps users to download the files.

• GIF: it stands for Graphic Interchange Format. It is used for storing graphics.

• GHZ: it stands for GigaHertz.

• GUI: it stands for Graphical User Interface.

• GRAPHICS CARD: it is an alternative for video call.

• HACKER: a person who tries to gain access to other’s information which is stored in
their computers.

• HDD: it is an abbreviation for Hard Disc Drive.

• HEXADECIMAL: it is a number system used in computers which is composed of 16


digits. (0-9 numbers and A to F letters which represent 10 to 15).

• HOST NAME: it is a name given to an internet which is written like 152.234.176.24

• HTML: It is an abbreviation for Hypertext Markup Language. It is a coding system


which is used for creating pages on the World Wide Web.

• HTTP: it stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. This protocol is used to establish a
link between browsers and requested web page (website).

• HTTPS: it stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure. It means that all the
connection between browser and website are encrypted. It is the secure version of
HTTP. It is the protocol over which data between browser and website are connected
to.

• ISP: it denotes Internet Service Provider.

• INTRANET: it is a private network inside an educational organization or company and


used over LAN.

• ISDN: it stands for Integrated Services Digital Network.

• JPEG/JPG: it stands for Joint Photographic Expert Group.

• LAN: it stands for Local Area Network which means a network of computers at one
site will provide services to other computers connected to it.

• LASER PRINTER: it is a kind of printer which works by firing a laser at a rotating drum.

• LCD: it stands for Liquid Crystal Display.

• LINUX: it is a Unix-type operating system.

• LIVEWARE: human beings are called live ware as we are using both hardware and
software.

• MAN: it stands for Metropolitan Area Network. It’s a network of computers located
at different sites.

• MBPS: it’s an abbreviation for Megabits per second.

• MIME: It stands for Multipurpose Internet mail extension. It is the extension of


original SMTP. It allows the people to exchange different kinds of data files on the
computer internet like audio, video, graphics.

• MPEG OR MPG: it stands for Motion Picture Expert Group.

• NETIQUETTE: online behavior is called netiquette.

• OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE: the software which are free for the user but at the same
time source code of the software is available to user are called Open Source
Software. For example: AVL i.e. Anti-virus, Mozilla, Wikipedia, open fire fox, Apache.

• OPTICAL DISC: it is a computer disc which uses a laser to read and write data.

• PHISHING: It is the attempt to obtain sensitive information such as user name,


password or credit card number. It is usually done by sending the emails that seem to
appear to come from credible sources.

• POOR RECALL: Finding the large number of documents with little information is
called poor recall.

• POP: It stands for Post Office Protocol. It is the protocol that helps the user to
download email from email server.

• IMAP: It stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. It is the protocol that helps the
user to download email from email server. It lets the users to keep their email on
their system.

• PUBLIC DOMAIN: material that is copyright free.

• QR CODE: it stands for Quick Response Mode.

• RIPPING: It’s a process of copying audio video content to hard disk typically from
removable media such as CD, DVD, or Pen drive.

• SHAREWARE: the software i.e. distributed for free but for a specific period of time
usually 15 to 30 days are known as shareware. For example: Trialware, WinZip.

• SMTP: it stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It helps out user to send email
from one system to another.

• SPAM: it is the unsolicited junk email sent indiscriminately in bulk to every user.

• SUBNETTING: It is the process by which IP address is converted into its binary. The

• WAN: it stands for Wide Area Network. It’s a network of computers located at

• WEBCAM: the term denotes a camera connected to the computer that enables it to
