EXPERIMENT I

CABLE CONSTRUCTION AND TESTING

Objective:
 To implement a Category 5(Cat5) Straight Through & Cross Over Ethernet
network cables
 To be able to apply twisted-pair cables
 To test the cables for good connection

Hardware Requirements:
 Unshielded twisted pair cable(Cat-5e or Cat-6)
 Crimping tool
 RJ-45 Connectors
 Cable Tester
 Knife or Scissors
Making A Straight-Through Cable
 Practical Procedures

Step 1 Strip off about 1 inches of the Ethernet cable sheath

Step 2 Un-twist the Wire pairs


Step 3 Align the colored wires according to the wiring diagrams. Trim all the wires to the
same length.

Step 5 Insert the wires into the RJ45 plug

Step 6 Verify the wires ended up the right order.

Step 7 Crimp the RJ45 plug with the crimping tool

Step 8 Repeat the above steps for the second RJ45 plug
Step 9 Test Straight-through Cable with cable tester
Instructions
1. Write a report for step-by-step installation of straight-through cable and crossover
cable.
2. Describe UIP cable connection types and their applications.
