1. OBJECT

This norme defines the metallurgical characteristics for flat steel (alloy and non alloy) and aluminium products,
cold or hot rolled, used in the form of wide strip, wide slit strip and strip.

2. SAMPLING OF TEST SPECIMENS

2.1. COIL

Samples can be taken from any points of the coil.

2.2. SHEET, BAR

Samples are taken anywhere in the stack. Test specimens are taken from the centre of the sample.

3. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS

A chemical analysis of elements stipulated in specific requirements must be carried out according to AFNOR
methods or methods in force within the Group. The latter must be released to suppliers on request.

4. TENSILE TEST

4.1. GENERAL

With the exception of details to the contrary mentioned below, the tensile test is carried out in conformity with
norme NF EN 10002-1.

The test must be carried out at a temperature of 23 ± 5°C.

The acceptance indicators shown in the product normes encompass the measurement uncertainties.

4.2. SAMPLING OF TEST SPECIMENS

For the measurement of conventional characteristics and when the dimensions of the product allow it, the test
specimens are taken from the following directions according to the grade:
• parallel to the rolling direction,
• perpendicular to the rolling direction.
Special cases : For strip with a width less than or equal to 200 mm, the test specimens are taken parallel to the
direction of rolling.

4.2.1. MACHINING OF TEST SPECIMENS

In practice, it is permissible that test specimens with a thickness less than or equal to 1,20 mm are cut out and
deburred.

In case of dispute, test specimens must be machined cold and produced without hammering or cold working of the
edges. Rolling faces must be retained. Edges only are machined. These must be free of transverse scratches.
Test specimens are used as delivered or normalised.

4.2.2. FORM AND DIMENSIONS OF TEST SPECIMENS

As a general rule and in case of litigation, the test specimen has fastening lugs larger than the calibrated part.
However, the test specimen may consist of a strip with parallel sides. In this case, the free length between the
machine jaws will be 140 mm for test specimens 20 mm wide.

Sheet < 3 mm thick :

Test specimen of ISO type 20 x 80 which is:
• length of calibrated part : 120 mm
• width of calibrated part : 20 mm
• length between marks : Lo = 80 mm

Sheet > 3 mm thick :

Proportional test specimen which is :
• length of calibrated part: 120 mm
• width of calibrated part : 20 mm
• length between marks : Lo = 5,65 SO

In the case of non alloy steel coated with zinc (Zinc electroplated or Galvanised), the section of the test specimen
So in mm is calculated taking into account the thickness of the non coated metal.

4.3. MACHINE SPEED

The loading speed must not be in excess of:

Automatic machine Elastic Plastic

region region

Steel 25 ± 5 N/mm2.s-1 0,008. s-1

Alumuinium 8 ± 2 N/mm2.s-1 0,008. s-1

4.4. MEASUREMENT OF THE ELASTIC LIMIT

A preload of 5 MPa must be applied.

The Young’s modulus recommended for steel is 210 Gpa ; for aluminium it is 70 Gpa.

This is the conventional elastic limit at 0,2% elongation. If the graph shows a plateau, the elastic limit
taken into account is the lower flow rate limit ReL.
The plateau length enables the susceptibility of the product to strain ageing to be assessed.

4.5. MEASUREMENT OF PRESSING CHARACTERISTICS

Cold working (n) and anisotropic (r) coefficients are used as an indication of the aptitude of a sheet to be drawn in a
uniform way.
The elongation values to take into account for the measurement vary according to the grade.

GRADE n r

EXTRA MILD 8 to 18% 18%

High yield strength (H.L.E.) 4 to 12% or 4 to Ag % 12 or Ag %
ALUMINIUM 5000 and 6000 10 to 15% or 10 to Ag % 10 or Ag%

The methods for determinating these coefficients are defined in normes ISO 10.275 and ISO 10.113.

4.6. BREAKS

Breaks must be clean, with no splits or blowholes that are a cause for batch rejection.
With regard to steel, if there is the slightest doubt on this matter, the test specimens must be etched with acid
(ex. HCI), if the metal exhibits a laminated structure, the batch is rejected.

5. BEND TEST
With the exception of contrary details mentioned below, the bend test is in conformity with normes

NF EN ISO 7438 Matériaux métalliques. Essai de pliage

(Metallic materials. Bend test)

Test specimens with a minimum width of 30 mm are sampled parallel and at right angles to the direction of rolling
and as far as possible near the centre line of the strip. For strips wider than 60 mm, the test specimen is taken only
from the longitudinal direction.
Only the edges are machined and the corners broken. Bending is always carried out cold, roughed out using a
folding tool with a radius equal to the thickness of the sheet or the thickness of the gauge (stipulated on the
specific norme). and is determined against this gauge.
No cracks or surface cracks must be found after bending.

6. HARDNESS TEST

The hardness test is carried out on steel as delivered:

6.1. FLAT STEEL PRODUCTS

In Rockwell 30 T (ball diameter 1,59 mm under a load of 30 kgf) or Vickers (diamond under a load of 5 to 10 kgf)
for sheet with a thickness < 0,60 mm in accordance with normes NF EN ISO 6508-1 Rockwell hardness test or
NF EN ISO 6507-1 Vickers hardness test..

In Rockwell B (ball diameter 1,59 mm under a load of 100 kgf) or Vickers (diamond under a load of 5 to 10 kgf)
for sheet with a thickness > 0,60 mm and < 3 mm, according to NF EN ISO 6508-1 Rockwell hardness test or
NF EN ISO 6507-1 Vickers hardness test.

In Brinell 5/750 (ball diameter 5 mm under a load of 750 kgf) for sheet with a thickness > 3 mm according to
norme NF EN ISO 6506-1 Brinell hardness test.

Note : For thin products (thickness, e < 1 mm) a deformation on the face in contact with the anvil may show.
In these conditions, the hardness indicated is for information only. It is recommended for 0,60 < e
<0,75 mm to carry out a HRF hardness test (1/16" ball under a load of 60 kgf).

6.2. FLAT ALUMINIUM PRODUCTS

in Rockwell 30T : NF EN ISO 6508-1

in Brinell : NF EN ISO 6506-1
in Vickers : according to norme NFA 03-253

7. MACROSCOPIC EXAMINATION

This examination must be carried out on steel flat products. It must be carried out on the straight section of the strip
at right angles to the rolling direction.
After polishing the section to delete the cutting out faults, the sample is etched with hydrochloric acid diluted to 50%
at boiling temperature for 5 minutes.
No splitting or blowholes must be found. If the metal originates from a continuous cast, a line or a visible alignment
of micro-cavities at mid-thickness may be revealed by this examination with no real discontinuity of the structure, in
case of doubt a microstructural examination must be carried out.

8. MICROSTRUCTURAL EXAMINATION

This examination enables:

• the most contaminated field for each type of inclusion to be quoted, according to JERNKONTORET scale
in conformity with norme NF A 04-106,
• the size, homogeneity and form of the grain to be assessed, in conformity with NF A 04-102 as well as the
distribution of carbides, structure and decarburisation (norme D35 1192).

9. ROUGHNESS

The method for measuring roughness is defined in méthode d’essai D35 5419.
The roughness values are defined in norme B53 3059 for steel and B54 1059 for aluminium.

10. OTHER TESTS

Additional tests may be proved necessary, the Group reserves the right to specify or complete this norme by an
addenda. (Ex.: oiling of products in accordance with norme D65 5353).
