HOW TO EMBROIDER CHEEKS
HOW TO EMBROIDER A SMILE
                                                PATTERN
HEAD, BODY & TAIL (starting with the head in main color)
R1. mr of 7 sc (=7)
* Haven’t mastered the magic ring yet? Instead, you can chain 2 and make your 7 sc in the 2nd chain
from the hook. Video tutorial (silent).
R2. 7 inc (=14)
R3. 14 sc (=14)
R4 includes color changes to make the gills (G*). Stitches in bold and grey will be in the contrasting
color. I usually drop the main color and take it back after the gills are done (leaving the yarn loose inside
the head). See images 1-4 to see when I change color for these.
*G = gill = ch 3, starting in 2nd ch from hook: 2 sl st
R4. 4 sc, (G, 1 sc in head) x2, G, 4 sc, (G, 1 sc in head) x2, G, 2 sc (=14)
Cut contrasting yarn and tie a double knot with both tails [image 5].
Secure the eyes between R2-3 on both sides of the head, in line with the middle gills [image 6].
Optional: embroider a mouth between the eyes and cheeks under the eyes.

TAIL’S FIN (in color of your choice)
Insert your hook at the top of the body between R9-10 and out between R10-11 [image 11], pull up a loop

Cut a long yarn tail and pull it out. Insert your needle 1 stitch away (this will make the tail curve a
little) and push it out where the beginning tail is [image 13]. Tie both tails together and hide them inside
the body [images 14-15].
