PATTERN NOTES
This amigurumi pattern is worked in a continuous round; do not sl st or ch 1 to join at the
end of each round.
Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round.
Bernat blanket yarn can be a bit delicate if you have not worked with it before. Pull gently
to close your magic circle and when closing your work. If you feel resistance, gently wiggle
the yarn tail until it gives or you risk it breaking.
Maintain tight sts throughout so stuffing does not show through.
This pattern offers two different tail fluke options; the heart fluke on page 3 or the
standard fluke on page 4.

FACTS
GET TO KNOW DEWEY

There are 42 identified species of dolphin and 7 species of porpoises.

Dolphins can be found all over the world and in different aquatic environments - that
includes oceans, estuaries and freshwater environments. Did you know the Amazon
River is home to four species of river dolphin?
Much like little ones, dolphins love to blow bubbles! They use bubbles to herd their
prey into a tight area before diving in. They also use their tales to wack their prey which
stuns it and makes it easier to catch.
Dolphins have their own language. They use a variety of whistles, clicks and squeaks
that allow them to communicate with each other and help to navigate their
environment and locate prey.
Dolphins are highly intelligent creatures. Similar to humans, they have the ability to
recognize themselves in a mirror and have been observed using tools to hunt. They
have also been observed "playing football" with pieces of seaweed, fetching it back and
forth.
Dolphins sleep with one eye open. They can shut off one side of their brain while they
sleep with one eye open looking out for the pod in case danger approaches.

CONSERVATION
Noise pollution from ships, the gas and oil industry, and under water construction is a
big concern for dolphins and whales as it interferes with their ability to communicate,
reproduce and locate food. What can you do? Support legislature to restrict and
oppose oil development. Your opinion matters.
Fishing gear is another big threat to dolphins. They are killed accidentally as bycatch in
gill nets, drift nets, long lines and trawls. Bycatch is the primary cause of mortality in
dolphins. The fishing nets deployed by tuna ships kill dolphins unintentionally in high
numbers. What can you do? Avoid consumption of tuna and limit other seafood
consumption.
What else can you do to help dolphins? Keeping the oceans clean and free of pollution
is one major step we all can take part in. To keep dolphins in the ocean where they
belong, avoid buying tickets to captive dolphin shows or any park that has captive
dolphins or whales. Instead, support eco-tourism and enjoy seeing dolphins in the wild.
