History
Marvel Comics was founded byMartin Goodman in 1939, with a constant number of name changes and failures of
launch. It was originally known as Red Circle Comics, Atlas Comics; although the most popular name (before
Marvel Comics is Timely Comics and its first major publication was Marvel Comics #1 (October 1939) and also by
which receives its current name, in which a superhero appeared for the first time in Marvel: the first Human Torch and the
VilanoNamor, the underwater man. Both characters became great successes for the company starring in almost
instantly their own series. Another popular superhero created in those times was the patriotic characterCaptain America.
During the 1950s, the company, like the entire American comic book industry, declined sharply as a result of the end of the
World War II. In 1957, Marvel almost closed its doors due to the bankruptcy of its distributor. During this time
the company was called Atlas Comics and published stories of monsters with a slight science fiction setting.
1960
In the early 60s, the company tried to return to the superhero genre that had been successfully revitalized by its
rival DC Comics a few years earlier.Stan LeeyJack Kirbythey then createdThe Fantastic Fourdrawing inspiration from DC's successes
Comics and in the monster stories that Atlas published. This comic was an absolute success revitalizing the company that
a long list of titles began, the most popular of them was undoubtedly 'The Amazing'Spider-Man(The Amazing Man)
Spider-Man) created by Lee and Steve Ditko.
1970
In this decade, the comic market entered a recession again. The company adapted by publishing new titles in genres.
like horror or witchcraft. Marvel attempted to acquire DC but the purchase did not materialize because DC wanted to retain the
rights to their most popular characters Superman and Batman. In the late 70s, the creative team formed by the
screenwriter Chris Claremont and artist John Byrne relaunched one of Marvel's old titles,X-Menconstituting the largest
success of the company during this time. In the late 70s, comics began to be sold in specialized stores.
1980
In the 80s, the editor-in-chief of Marvel was Jim Shooter. Despite his controversial personality, Shooter knew how to manage and 'heal'
many of the mistakes in the procedures that occurred at Marvel (including repeatedly lost endings) and giving a
vision of creative rebirth in the company. This rebirth included institutionalizing the rights of creators,
starting with the Epic printing for owner - creator materials from the year 1982, and launching a new line of brands (although
fruitless) named New Universe, to commemorate Marvel's 25th anniversary in 1986. Shooter was responsible for the
introduction of the company in new and broad crossovers (Contest of Champions, Secret Wars). In 1981, Marvel acquired the
animation studio: DePatie-Freleng Enterprises which created the famous Looney Tunes under the direction of the animator
Friz Freleng and his partner David H. DePatie. The company was renamed to Marvel Productions Ltd. and began to produce
animated series for television like G.I. Joe, Transformers, and even Jim Henson's Muppet Babies. In 1986 Marvel
was sold to New World Entertainment, which in just three years, in 1988, resold it to MacAndrews and Forbes, whose
the owner was Revlon's executive, Ronald Perelman. Perelman put the company on the New York stock market and
it led to a significant increase in the number of titles of the company. As part of the process, Marvel Productions sold its catalog
television to Saban Entertainment (acquired in 2001 by Disney).
1990
The company achieved significant profits in the early 1990s and the entire comic genre found itself in
it peaked both in the United States and in Europe. However, Perelman was accused of embezzlement and for a long time the
the company was involved in different litigations with various changes of owners and internal struggles. Finally, Isaac Pellmutter and Avi
Arad took control of the company. The licenses granted by Marvel to different film studios allowed
revitalize the company with successes like Spider-Man orX-Men. Artistically, this era was characterized by the numerous
series and crossovers, alternative storylines and miniseries releases with diverse success.
2000
With the new millennium, Marvel Comics escaped bankruptcy and once again began to diversify its offerings. In 2001, Marvel
he left the Comics Authorization Code and established his own Marvel Scale System for comics. The first title of
this new era was X-Force #119 (Oct. 2001). This brought with it new printing formats, such as MAX, a line
dedicated to mature readers, and Marvel Age, developed for younger audiences. In addition to this, there is the highly
successful format of Ultimate Marvel, which allowed Marvel to revitalize its titles with higher sales through the renewal of
their greatest heroes and villains to make them accessible to a new generation of readers. This new version takes place in
a universe that is parallel to the universe where the "normal continuity" of Marvel unfolds, allowing writers and
drawers freedom to redefine stories and character traits, so that all these changes do not affect the
established continuity. This way it has been able to capture a large influx of new readers who had not read comics.
previously but they were familiar with the characters through the movies and television series. Marvel also
has improved its graphic novel department, establishing a strong presence in bookstores. Stan Lee, who is currently not
holds no executive position except for that of 'Emeritus President', remains the public face of Marvel. In 2002, Stan Lee
he claimed a portion of the profits generated by the films and the marketing, based on a contract between him and
Marvel dating back to the late 90s; according to court documents, Marvel has used 'Hollywood accounting' to
declare that those projects did not generate benefits. Marvel Comics Entertainment (Film Division of Marvel) continues
on the New York Stock Exchange as MVL. Some characters and stories have become franchise films, the great
the exponent has been the X-Men movies, started in 2000, and the Spider-Man series, which began in 2002. In 2006,
Marvel created a crossover called 'Civil War' establishing in the Marvel universe a superhero registration, causing a
political and ethical schism among superheroes. Additionally, that year, Marvel created its own wiki. The company launched an online initiative
at the end of 2007 called 'Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited', a digital archive of 2500 published comics available for your
visualization, through an annual or monthly subscription. Marvel remains one of the fundamental publishers of
world comic despite the reduction of the North American comic market. The company gains enormous strength outside of the
comic circles through film adaptations of popular characters, such asX-Men, Spider-Man, Blade,Hulk, The
Punisher,Ghost Rider, Daredevil, Elektra, Iron ManoThe Fantastic Fouramong other characters. On August 31, 2009, the
