COMMUNICATION STYLES

Communication styles refer to the ways in which individuals

express themselves and convey information to others.

Understanding these styles can enhance interpersonal

interactions, improve relationships, and foster effective

communication.

 AGGRESSIVE COMMUNICATION

 DEFINITION: A style characterized by a forceful


and dominating approach, often at the expense of
others.
CHARACTERISTICS

 Loud and confrontational tone


 Use of sarcasm or insults
 Focused on winning arguments
ADVANTAGES
 Can assert needs and boundaries clearly
 May lead to immediate results in
negotiations

DISADVANTAGES
 Can create conflict and resentment
 Often leads to misunderstandings and
damaged relationships.
PASSIVE COMMUNICATION

 DEFINITION: A style where individuals avoid


expressing their thoughts and feelings, often
prioritizing others needs over their own.

CHARACTERISTICS

 Soft tone and body language


 Difficulty saying “no”
 Avoidance of conflict

ADVANTAGES

 Can maintain harmony in relationships


 Avoids confrontation

DISADVANTAGES
 Needs and opinions may be
overlooked
 Can lead to frustration and
resentment over time
 PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE COMMUNICATION

DEFINITION: A style that appears passive on


the surface but is characterized by indirect
resistance and avoidance of direct confrontation.

CHARACTERISTICS
 Sarcasm or backhanded compliments
 Procrastination or intentional inefficiency
 Withdrawal of communication

ADVANTAGES

 Can express dissatisfaction without direct confrontation


 Allows individuals to maintain an appearance

DISADVANTAGES
 Creates confusion and mistrust
 Can escalate conflicts over time
 ASSERTIVE COMMUNICATION
DEFINITION: A balanced and respectful
approach that involves expressing thoughts and
feelings openly while considering others rights
and feelings.

CHARACTERISTICS
 Clear and direct expression of needs
 Active listening and empathy
 Maintains eye contact and open body
language

ADVANTAGES
 Builds respect and understanding in
relationships
 Reduces stress and anxiety in
communication
DISADVANTAGES
 May be perceived as
confrontational by those used to
passive style
 Requires self-confidence and
practice

 SUBMISSIVE COMMUNICATION
DEFINITION: A style where individuals defer to
others and prioritize their own.

CHARACTERISTICS
 Avoids expressing personal opinions
 Agreeable and compliant behavior
 Often seeks approval from others
ADVANTAGES
 Can create an easygoing atmosphere
 Reduces the potential for conflict
DISADVANTAGES
 May lead to feelings of inadequacy
or resentment
 Personal needs and opinions may
remain unexpressed
