Classroom Philosophies and Expectations
Intro Course Philosophy: In this course the philosophy is simple; Art
is not exclusive. Everyone has the ability to create and everyone has the ability
to generate ideas. In this course everyone will be able to create something out of
their generated ideas. Also, nobody is allowed to say I cant do it. Art is not
about being the best or the most original. Art is about making and everyone, in
my class, has the ability to make and create something unique.
Personal Philosophy: My personal philosophy about education
and art revolves around transference. Every single skill and problem encountered
in the art classroom can be transferred into other areas of study as well as the
real world after school. I will approach this class not only as an educator of art
and its history, but as an educator of the real world. I will teach the content that
allows you to fully understand art as well as understand how to deal with life
outside of the classroom. Whether its problem solving, planning, reflecting, fixing
mistakes, etc. there is always something in the classroom that you have learned
that you can apply in real world situations. I will teach this class as a form of art
and life working hand in hand.
Expectations & Procedures Expectations: Show others respect, will participate in class
critiques, will properly handle all tools, materials, and other supplies correctly, will
respect the classroom space, NO hateful speech to other students, NO hateful
speech about other student art, will participate in class cleanup, will give
speakers full attention when presenting in class, will participate in class demos,
will appreciate given work time and use it wisely
Grading: All quizzes, tests, samples, sketches, projects, essays,
and artist reflections will be graded on the A-F scale. (F: 0-59, D: 60-69, C: 7079, B:80-89, A: 90-100)
Late Work: Any work turned in late, without an excused absence,
will be allowed at reduced points. Work turned in late with an excused absence
will be allowed at full points. After 3 class periods work will only be worth 60% of
the full original grade. Late work will not be accepted 2 weeks after the final due
date.
Tardies: Students are allowed 3 unexcused tardies. 1st tardy will
be noted but not addressed. 2nd tardy will lead to a verbal warning. 3rd tardy will
lead to written warning sent home to be signed by parents. After 3 unexcused
tardies students will be sent on a trip to the administration office (principal, dean,
counselor, etc.)
Absences: Any excused absences from class will not result in
punishment, as long as documentation is provided (note from parent/guardian,
doctor, other teachers, etc.). Unexcused absences will result in punishment after
3. It is understandable that life may bring unforeseen circumstances forth and
therefore students will be given some wiggle room. However, classroom work
time is incredibly important in the art classroom and therefore should be utilized
to highest amount. After 3 unexcused absences, the student, parent, and I will sit
down with the principal or dean to work out a punishment and address how to
work on this problem in the future.
Extra Credit: Extra credit is a privilege and not a right. Extra
credit will only be given to students who have given a full effort in the class and
need an extra boost to push their grade. Students with a C- or lower will not be
allowed extra credit. Students at a C or higher will be allowed to work out an
extra credit project with myself. Extra credit will not be allowed past one grade
level. After students have raised their grade one grade level, extra credit will be
maxed out and no longer allowed. Extra credit will not be offered through the
whole semester. It will only be offered during the last 2 weeks of the semester
once the students have a better idea of what their final grade will be.
Communication: When problems arise, I will address problems
with the student first to find out what is going on. If problems keep arising with the
same student, eventually I will maintain communication with the students
parent/guardian through email or phone calls. If parents/guardians cannot be
reached, I will approach an administration professional to address the problem
with the student and their parent/guardian.
Participation Expectations In class: Students will be given a grade every day based on the
amount of participation and focus given during class work time. This participation
grade will account for 25% of their final grade
Materials: If students show up to class without materials or tools,
and therefore cannot participate, this will result in a 0 for that days participation
grade.
End of year art show: Students will be allowed to recover
missing participation points by showing up at the end of year art show exhibit. If
the students show up, that will result in 10 extra participation points. If the student
brings a parent/guardian that will result in 25 extra participation points. If the
student shows up, with a parent/guardian, and presents their art for me and their
parent guardian, this will result in 50 extra participation points.
