Micro-teach Post Reflection
Leading up to my lesson I was very nervous to teach for the first time and was worried
how the class would respond. It was not until I got into my presentation that the nerves left and
I was able to get to my confident self again. I felt that the class was responding well and they
seemed to enjoy the lesson. The activity of drawing out the food chain went great and the
students seemed to be engaged in what was going on. After the lesson was over I got some
great feedback from Jana first. She said that my tone and the way I carried myself throughout
the lesson was excellent. That was great to hear because my confidence is something I believe
is a strength of mine, so for her to notice that as well was awesome to hear. Also, she informed
me that I planned out my lesson well and concluded it in a way to demonstrate the students
understanding of food chains. It was also informative to read some of the feedback from my
peers. A lot of it was similar to Janas, such as a confident voice and good closure of the lesson.
They also thought it was good that during the drawing of the chain activity I was walking
around and checking in on the students work. For me, I thought the strengths of the lesson
were the same as what my peers gave me. I also thought that I maintained a good pace
throughout the lesson that allowed me to think my thoughts out well and limit the chances of
me speaking to quickly, which I tend to struggle with. My tone was extremely confident and
addressed the students with respect, which helped create a good atmosphere in the room.
There were a couple things I would have liked to do differently based off of some of the
feedback I got. I would have liked to add a more interactive active on the smartboard to get the
students up and participating. Also, I think if I paced around the room more compared to
standing in the same spot, it would have been better. I do not think I would change my planning
much because for my first lesson I thought it went smooth. What I have learned to inform my
future teaching self is that it is ok to be nervous before teaching because once you get started
everything will go great and that confidence will come out. That making sure I always end a
lesson with a conclusion so I can assess that the students have learned something from it. Also,
a couple of the students agreed that another interactive activity would have been helpful to
supplemented the lesson. All in all, I thought the lesson went fantastic and was a success for
the first one.
