Elementary Science Olympiad

Saturday, April 21
Introduction
● Teams of 16-17 members
● Each person has:
○ one lab event
○ one build event
Build Events
● You will be given an event and materials
○ Build the device in science club (7 days to complete)
○ Compete with it on April 21

● Hot Air Balloon, Rubber Band Catapult, Pastamoblie, Straw

Tower, Barge Building, Egg Drop, Paper Rockets
Hot Air Balloon (50 min)
● Teams of 3 will make a hot air balloon out of plastic
bags and other materials that will stay in the air
with a hairdryer

● Scored on flight time and aesthetics

Rubber Band Catapult (20 min)
● Teams of 2-3 will make a device that can launch a
rubber band

● Scored on greatest distance
Pasta Mobile (60 min)
● Teams of up to 4 will create a vehicle out of glue
and pasta

● Scored based on how far the car travels and if the
car stays intact
Straw Tower (45 min)
● Teams of 2 will try to build the strongest straw
tower using 50 straws and a length of masking tape

● Scored based on tower height divided by tower
mass
Barge Building (20 min)
● Teams of 2 will create a barge that will hold the
largest number of objects without getting them wet

● Scored based on amount of cargo it can hold
Egg Drop (20 min)
● To build a package that will keep an egg from
breaking after being dropped free fall from a high
spot

● Will be graded by drop height, weight of package,
and condition of egg
Paper Rockets (30 min)
● Teams of 2-3 will build a paper rocket that can be
launched from an air pump

● Scored based on size of rocket and time it stays in
the air
Lab Events
● You will learn information on an assigned event, perform a
lab on the topic, and be judged based on how well you do
○ We will be teaching you a new lab event every other
week

● Escape Room, Grab a Gram, Write it, Do it, Reflection Relay,
Bridge Building, Get Your Bearings, Mystery Powders
Escape Room (15 min)
● Teams of three will solve puzzles in a given amount of time
using knowledge they have obtained from past meetings to
escape from a locked room

● Scored based on time needed to escape the room or number

of puzzles solved
Grab a Gram (60 min)
● Teams of two will try to pick up 50 grams of two different
materials

● Scored on the accuracy of the material’s mass

Write It, Do It (55 min)
● One partner is shown a contraption build with
legos, blocks, science equipment, etc., and have 25
minutes to write a description of the object and
how to build it
● Second partner (in a different room) will have 20
minutes to recreate the contraption based on
partner’s description
Reflection Relay (30 min)
● Teams of 3 will cooperate to bounce a laser beam
off of pocket mirrors and onto a target
○ All three mirrors must be used

● Scored on time needed to bounce laser onto target

Bridge Building (45 min)
● Teams of 2 will construct a straw bridge that can
hold a weight for at least 10 seconds

● Scored based on bridge length and strength
Get Your Bearing (15 min)
● Teams of up to 2 will use a compass and directions
to locate metal objects on a large open area

● Scored on number of objects correctly found

Mystery Powders (20 min)
● Teams of 2 will identify mixtures of white powder
by using the given materials (water, vinegar, ect.)
○ Can use a chart made before the event

● Scored on accuracy and time
