Generation Gap - Fashion

Fashion plays an important role in society and culture. It acts as a form of nonverbal communication that conveys information about aspects of a person's identity and social affiliations. Fashion trends have changed over time between past and present in areas like clothing, jewelry, and body piercings. Clothing such as Indian sari blouses and the wearing of jewelry have become less conservative. While navel rings were once seen as rebellious, they are now more widely accepted. Bridging the generation gap in fashion preferences requires both younger and older generations to understand each other's perspectives and find compromise in styles that appeal to multiple age groups.

HOW TO REDUCE
GENERATION GAP ?
TRY TO BRIDGE THE GENERATION GAP
To accommodate the evolving tastes of
women over 35, stores like Talbots say they must
delicately introduce fashionable merchandise
without turning off core customers who depend on
them for classic styles. Talbots learned its lesson in
1997 when the company strayed from its tailored
look and tried to channel youth with trendy short
skirts and high slits. The company had its worst year
ever, according to spokeswoman Margery Myers,
but now Talbots knows to offer items that are stylish
but forgiving for what nature does to mature
bodies.

OLDER GENERATION SHOULD ACCEPT YOUNG
GENERATIONS CULTURE
''Our customer wants fashion, but fashion that fits her," said
Talbots chief executive Arnold Zetcher. ''She views herself
as younger -- the 50-year-old woman today thinks of herself
as 40."

SHARE EACH OTHERS CULTURE
According to Cotton Incorporateds
Lifestyle Monitor TM, 24% of woman ages 35 to 55
say that the reason they stopped shopping in stores
they frequented3 or 4 years ago, is that their
taste in clothing has changed. 92% of women in this
age group say they are more likely to buy clothes
in the colours that look good on them, rather than
colours that are in fashion

At Garnet Hill, the approach has been one of
steadily incorporating more trendy looks into the
line. Our roots are in classic design and tailored
fashion, and we have a very sophisticated customer,
so we have been giving them classic with a twist.
And that twist is a dose of younger attitude, says
spokesperson Kimberly Aylward, who notes that the
companys look is a lot younger than it was five
years ago, or even just two years ago.
