Ella Taylor L.A. Weekly A fond genre move that's forever chortling up its sleeve at the puerile idiocy of the genre, a heist caper without a heist, an action movie that's hopelessly in love with talk and a poem to the sexiness of storytelling. Jan 12, 2024 Full Review Joe Pollack St. Louis Post-Dispatch The story is as phony as the names the robbers take - Mr. White, Mr. Blue, Mr. Blonde, Mr. Pink and Mr. Brown - and it's also a hymn to violence, blood and sadism that reaches repulsive levels. Oct 14, 2022 Full Review Jay Carr Boston Globe And while Tarantino never quite succeeds in putting around each character the sense of isolation that marks the best noirs, he carries off this exercise in lively fashion. It's more purple than noir, but it's got juice. Apr 27, 2018 Full Review Jack Walters Loud and Clear Reviews "Quentin Tarantino’s feature debut Reservoir Dogs is an astounding single-location thriller that makes the most of its all-star cast and refined script." Rated: 4.5/5 Jan 18, 2025 Full Review Tim Brayton Alternate Ending The film's biggest single problem is that the director learned so much from making it that he went on to keep making things that were better. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 13, 2025 Full Review John Brhel Vague Visages Reservoir Dogs is an impressive debut that reflects Tarantino's unique, postmodern style and points towards things to come. Donavin D Quentin Tarantino’s films have a special place in my heart, from their focused and impactful stories to their organic and memorable dialogue to characters that clearly spring to mind as their names or movies are mentioned. The first movie to bring his filmography into the lime light is Reservoir Dogs, laying the groundwork for how all of his future films would function — it’s compelling, violent and most importantly, incredibly entertaining. The story follows the set up, failure and aftermath of a bank hesit but the film is less about the heist itself and more about how it was foiled — with police showing up far too quickly the gang begin to turn on each other and question if there is a traitor among them. This premise, which would be a B or C story in some films today is the primary focus of this film and it’s all the better for it. We get to sit in this moment in time with these characters as they believably work out what happened while tensions rise. I say all of this to express how his storytelling often follows something that others might overlook and thats what makes it great. The characters are all solid with Michael Madson as a particular favorite playing Mr. Blonde, ruthless and evil with that one particular scene, set to the tune of ‘Stuck in the middle with you’ one that will never leave my memory. The film primarily takes place in one location, something Tarantino will employ in future films, and while it is serviceable and makes sense for the story, its not the most visually striking or interesting place to spend the majority of our time. I can sit here and gush about Tarantino’s style and how being influenced by television growing up fed into most of his later works but films like these are not often made anymore. It balanced visual modernity with the soul of something timeless and profound — a depth few directors have ever reached. He is, for better or worse, unapologetically himself in every scene and it is something that others have tried to replicate but can never truly be copied. Reservoir Dogs is beautiful and full of intentionality in every choice, a microcosm of events that drag you right in and make you feel like you are right there with everyone trying to figure out the crazy circumstances you find yourself in. The story and style and characters and music all pull every ounce of their weight to bring this one to life and their efforts were not in vain. PEAK Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/10/25 Full Review Grady M Reservoir Dogs is an impressive debut that reflects Tarantino's unique, postmodern style and points towards things to come. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/08/25 Full Review Jason H A solid debut from QFT. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/18/25 Full Review Marce S Tarantino's debut, ish, is his masterpiece. He blends his interesting dialogue with a mystery and cool timeline. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/16/25 Full Review Josh D I love how most of the movie is filmed in a single setting. The characters are interesting and the set up is great. Might be my favorite tarantino flick Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/14/25 Full Review Read all reviews
