What to Know

Critics Consensus

Slow Horses loosens the reins in a more lighthearted season that doesn't quite measure up to the series' high bar, but it still excels as one of the most compulsively watchable offerings on television.

Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) ...[This season] doesn’t miss a beat, combining twisty momentum and sardonic humour as a terror crisis builds during a London mayoral election. That’s a terrific achievement, but also a finale of sorts. Rated: 4.5/5 Sep 25, 2025 Full Review Ben Dowell The Times (UK) It is glorious fun, a taut, twisty and enjoyable thriller laced with so many funny moments. Rated: 4/5 Sep 24, 2025 Full Review Maddy Mussen London Evening Standard It is undeniably watchable. But this season points a lot of fingers without actually making any clear decisions. Rated: 3/5 Sep 24, 2025 Full Review Tim Stevens The Spool To draw the distinction between Slow Horses Season 1-4 and Slow Horses Season 5 is a bit like ranking the 92-93 Chicago Bulls the worst team of their dynasty era(s). It may be true, but it still feels a bit petty. Oct 21, 2025 Full Review Kyle Mullin Under the Radar Rather than trying to redo that mano-a-mano dynamic, prolonging the suspense and the mystery of the villain this season is intriguing, and culminates in a hugely satisfying twist. Rated: 8/10 Oct 15, 2025 Full Review Chris Joyce Movies and Munchies (YouTube) Because one of the plot points is so evident, this season might be better enjoyed by waiting until all episodes are out to binge as a whole, so you’re not left waiting an entire week before being able to wash the glaring predictability out of your eyes. Michael V. Every season, the show just keeps being top tier. Oldman could read me the phone book. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/30/25 Full Review Bob W After an excellent first series, Slow Horses has steadily lost its bearings to the extent that half way through the final episode of series 5, I was so appalled at the poor writing, terrible action direction, and general daftness that I nearly gave up on it and switched off. There are so many things wrong with the series now that it would take some time to go through the list. And the deterioration is made worse by the fact that I really wanted to enjoy this series, and also respect the fact that all the actors put a major shift in, despite the awful material and direction they have to work with. One of the final scenes where the two agents are bickering with each other as they line up shots on the terrorist holding the mayor hostage was especially excruciatingly inept: the writer and director don’t seem to realise that the total absence of tension shown by the agents wholly undermines any coherence in the scene itself, and it is neither funny nor thrilling in any way. What a shambles! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/30/25 Full Review Eva B For me it wasn't the best seasons but still interesting! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/30/25 Full Review Richard B London Rules Cover your ass, as Jackson Lamb says. The impossible working class misfits come to aid of the toffs at MI5 when terrorism strikes again! This 5th season is based on the 5th Mick Herron novel and it doesn't disappoint. It has a bit more comedy than previous seasons, with River and the hooded one accidentally killing Nigel Farage (!), Lamb delivering funny monologues and the idiotic 1st Desk dissembling until roasted at last by the Slow Horses. Roddy Ho was the standout Horse in this season, genuinely funny and awkward in the worst way. Superb script, acting and directing, the BBC would and could never make this series. Next up is Joe Country, featuring River's murderous father. Already shot. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/30/25 Full Review Cynthia S The plot is so sophomoric and really insults my intelligence. Season 1-3 had me wanting more and seasons 4-5 did NOT deliver. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/29/25 Full Review Ivan F Slow Horses spoils us with another witty, fast-paced season. Everyone is excellent in their roles, except Nick Mohammed - there are probably dozens of actors who would do his Mayor of London more convincingly.
