The NAHPU Project

Leveraging emerging digital technologies to accelerate biodiversity inventories

The NAHPU project

The NAHPU project is a collaborative initiative to develop a cross-platform digital catalog app and supporting software suites to digitize natural history collections and deliver data insights at the point of collection. We aim to accelerate biodiversity research and provide digital tools to strengthen the natural history collection's role as an essential resource for evolutionary studies, conservation management, and disease surveillance. Our plans:

Short-term:

  • Enables natural history museums to streamline data collection from the field to museum databases, eliminating errors from secondary data entry associated with conventional paper catalogs.
  • Simplify managing complex fieldwork records, including voucher specimens, associated specimen parts, ecological data, collecting efforts, field journals, and derivative media (photographs, audio, and video).

Long-term:

  • Real-time analytics, utilizing both conventional and advanced machine-learning methods.
  • Comprehensive data collection, integration, and management, including genomic and 2D/3D phenomic integration.

Supported catalog formats

  • Mammalogy 🐿️
  • Ornithology 🦅
  • Herpetology 🐍
  • Ichthyology (in development) 🐠
  • Paleontology (in development) 🦣
  • Entomology (in development) 🦋
