What is Goftar?

Goftar (meaning "speech" or "discourse" in Persian) is a lightweight, self-hosted forum platform built with PHP and SQLite — designed from the ground up for communities that speak RTL languages like Persian, Arabic, and Urdu. It delivers a modern user experience with zero external database dependencies, making it incredibly easy to deploy on any shared hosting or VPS.

Why Goftar?

  • No MySQL needed — runs entirely on a single SQLite file
  • RTL-first design — the entire interface is built with bidirectional layout support using CSS logical properties
  • Truly lightweight — no heavy frameworks, no Composer dependencies, no Node.js build step. Just upload and run
  • Feature-rich — polls, gated content, galleries, NSFW system, static pages CMS, file uploads with quota management, and a powerful admin panel — all out of the box

Quick Installation

Step 1 — Download & Upload

Download the latest release from GitHub Releases and upload all files to your web server's document root (e.g., public_html, htdocs, or var/www/html).

Step 2 — Set Permissions

Make sure the web server can write to the storage and config directories:

chmod -R 755 storage/
chmod -R 755 config/

Step 3 — Run the Installer

Open your site URL in a browser. You'll be automatically redirected to the multi-language installer. The installer will:

  1. Check server requirements — verifies PHP version and required extensions
  2. Site configuration — enter your site title, slogan, and URL
  3. Admin account — create the administrator username, display name, and password
  4. Security questions — set up recovery questions for password reset
  5. Review & Install — confirm all settings and click Install

The installer automatically creates the SQLite database and disables itself after completion.

Step 4 — Start Using Your Forum

After installation, log in with your admin credentials, go to the Admin Panel, create your first category, and start creating topics.
