also, this mechanism is prepared for parallel execution

also, jobs control was enabled in the script to easily send
signals to child processes (using process groups)

use of 'set -e' was dropped because it was not possible that
normal script behavior included returning non-zero exit code
practially anywhere in the source code (which was intended and
needed in some cases -- mainly for functions)
