Yâr (یار)

yar.parsa.wtf

I built this for someone I love.

He wanted to learn Persian, and I wanted to give him more than a textbook. I wanted to give him the language the way I know it—the food my mom made, the poetry that raised me, the slang that makes my friends laugh, the proverbs my grandmother repeated until they became part of how I think.

Persian is a 2,500-year-old language spoken by 110 million people. It's the language of Rumi, Hafez, and Ferdowsi. It's the language of taarof—that beautiful, infuriating dance of politeness. It's the language I dream in.

And now it's something I get to share.

What's inside

13 chapters across 5 phases. From the alphabet to poetry. From "hello" to "I love you" to things I probably shouldn't teach anyone.

  • The script — 32 letters, their forms, how they connect (and the seven that refuse to)
  • The familiar — hundreds of words you already know (computer, telephone, taxi...)
  • The food — kebabs, stews, rice dishes, sweets, and strong opinions about ghormeh sabzi
  • The real talk — slang, curses, and the things textbooks are too polite to include
  • The soul — poetry, proverbs, holidays, and the philosophy baked into the language

There's a manifesto about ghormeh sabzi. There are Parsa notes scattered throughout—personal commentary, memories, jokes. This isn't a sanitized curriculum. It's the language as I live it.

Why

Most language apps feel clinical. Duolingo teaches you to say "the elephant drinks milk" in 47 languages. That's not how anyone learns to feel a language.

I wanted to build something that captures what it actually feels like to grow up speaking Persian. The sounds of the bazaar. The taste of noon-sangak fresh from the oven. The way my dad quotes Hafez at dinner. The jokes that don't translate.

Language isn't vocabulary. Language is culture. Language is memory. Language is love.

Technical stuff

React, TypeScript, Vite, Tailwind, Framer Motion. PWA so it works offline. Nothing fancy—just enough to get out of the way and let the content breathe.

یار مرا غار مرا عشق جگرخوار مرا

My friend, my refuge, my heart-devouring love

— Rumi
