BetaNYC

BetaNYC is a civic organization dedicated to improving lives in New York through civic design, technology, and data.

We help New Yorkers access information and use technology for the public interest. We support residents, community organizations, and government in using open data, design, and technology to make public systems more accountable, accessible, and effective.

What we build here

The repositories in this organization hold civic tools, open-data analysis, maps, and the code behind BetaNYC programs. We build in the open so the work is free for New Yorkers to use, learn from, and improve.

Grounded in four digital freedoms

Our work extends the People's Roadmap to a Digital New York City (2013):

  • Freedom to Connect. Affordable, high-speed internet is infrastructure, as essential as clean water, and every New Yorker deserves it.
  • Freedom to Learn. Access to knowledge, data, and tools belongs to everyone, regardless of age, language, faith, gender identity, or class.
  • Freedom to Innovate. New York's strength comes from its people. Policy should create room for community-driven progress in every neighborhood.
  • Freedom to Collaborate. Participatory democracy requires the power to engage with government and with each other, and to shape the city we live in.

Get involved

  • Read the Code of Conduct. Every space we run, online and physical, including every repository here, operates under it.
  • New to a project? Start with its README, then its CONTRIBUTING guide.
  • Have a question or need help? See SUPPORT.md in any repo, or reach the community at https://www.beta.nyc/links.
  • Support the work. BetaNYC is a fiscally sponsored project of the Fund for the City of New York. You can give at https://www.beta.nyc/betabuilders.
