Qt-free modern core

An incremental Qt-free rewrite now lives in modern/. It provides a standalone C++17/FFmpeg 8+ playback core with an asynchronous Player API, decoded frame callbacks, and application-owned render scheduling. It is maintained for Windows, Android, and OHOS targets only. The former QtAVCore macOS/iOS implementation is preserved under archived_apple/ and is no longer maintained, built, tested, packaged, or installed. On a supported target, build the modern core independently with cmake -S modern -B build/modern; it does not link Qt or require a Qt event loop. Platform claims later in this file describe the legacy root QtAV implementation, not QtAVCore.

Pinned FFmpeg dependencies

QtAVCore builds must use FFmpeg and its dependency closure produced by this repository's ffmpeg/ vcpkg subproject, rather than a system/Homebrew or unrelated prebuilt target FFmpeg. Project builds and examples must resolve the package in this order:

  1. use the matching local target prefix when it and the sibling vcpkg status database already exist;
  2. otherwise build and verify the package locally with the matching platform entry script.

GitHub Actions artifacts are not a supported dependency fallback. CI may still publish them for diagnostics or archival purposes, but local builds and examples must not download or consume them.

Independently of that consumption order, a change that modifies anything under ffmpeg/** must rerun the affected platform build script locally and pass its installed-package verifier before the change is considered validated.

The supported target prefixes are:

Build a missing prefix locally from the repository root:

The Android PowerShell entry point discovers the SDK, an already installed NDK, and CMake from Android Studio; it never installs or replaces them. On macOS, use ffmpeg/scripts/build-android.sh or ffmpeg/scripts/build-ohos.sh. Run the corresponding native script unconditionally when the current change modifies ffmpeg/**.

QtAV is a multimedia playback library based on Qt and FFmpeg. It can help you to write a player with less effort than ever before.

QtAV is free software licensed under the term of LGPL v2.1. The player example is licensed under GPL v3. If you use QtAV or its constituent libraries, you must adhere to the terms of the license in question.

  • Compatibility: QtAV can be built with both Qt4 and Qt5, FFmpeg(>=1.0) and Libav (>=9.0). Latest FFmpeg release is recommended.

Extensible Framework

Some components in QtAV are designed to be extensible. For example, you can write your decoder, audio output for particular platform. Here is a very good example to add cedar hardware accelerated decoder for A13-OLinuXino

How To Write a Player

Write a media player using QtAV is quite easy.

How To Contribute

  • Fork QtAV project on github and make a branch. Commit in that branch, and push, then create a pull request to be reviewed and merged.
  • Create an issue if you have any problem when using QtAV or you find a bug, etc.
  • What you can do: translation, write document, wiki, find or fix bugs, give your idea for this project etc.
