Kings of War Reinforcements

We've been enjoying Kings of War of late, and our gaming group is in the process of repurposing old fantasy minis, and buying new ones, to give ourselves more list building options, I can't remember the last time everyone got this galvanised into painting like this.  I'm no exception and I've a few bits and pieces that I've finished in the last week or so;

Lets start with some actual Kings of War minis, these Forest Shamblers for my Forces of Nature army.  I've got three of these coming with my FoN starter army from Kickstarter later in the year, but experience has taught us that 'large infantry' hordes (units of six) are formidable so I couldn't resist getting another three now.

These three Merfolk are from Foundry and I am planning to use them as water elementals in my FoN army.  I've had to do a different base style for these figs, as merfolk on nice grassy pastures made no sense, so I've gone with what I hope signifies a sort of swampy ground that follows the merfolk around.  It still looks like they're floating about the water somewhat, but they are being used to represent magical nature spirits....

I've also been working on bringing my Hunters of the Wild upto a full regiment of twenty, partly for tactical reasons, but also because I really love the freedom to paint a few individual minis and yet put them together in this most flexible of unit modelling opportunities.  Here we have an ancient Greek piper, three GW Ungors and another Wood Elf sprite.

These five figures are wood nymphs from Foundry's Greek mythology range and will double up in my collection as Hunters of the Wild.

Here we have the whole formidable regiment of the Hunters of The Wild

This is Ronaldo the bard, one of the Kickstarter exclusives, Mantic haven't released his rules yet, so for now I will use him as an alternative army standard.

And finally here are the first five of ten Basilean sisterhood panther riders I got with the Mantic crazy xmas box last year.

Even More For The Forces Of Nature

I've been beavering away on some more stuff for my new Forces of Nature army for Kings of War.  To start with I went back to the remains of my Loka earth set and pulled out a bishop to serve as a druid.

After that I had a lot of fun making this unit of 'Hunters of the Wild'.  The unit description says the hunters are a mix of sprites, dryads, fauns, satyrs and other forest folk.  Basically an excuse to do what you like, I had a rummage round my spare minis boxes and managed to bring together this unit of ten that I'm really pleased with.  I've made a couple of purchases that will allow me to bring this unit up to 20 in the near future.

These two are a couple of Games Workshop Warhammer fantasy Beastmen Gors, now being used to represent Fauns

Also from Warhammer we have these two old metal Dryad minis, who were previously found playing bloodbowl with my Halfling team.

The Loka set provides yet more minis for the army with these dwarf pawns, painted green as to represent 'green men' forest spirits.

The unit is bought upto strength by a Warhammer Wood Elf Sprite, an elf huntress that was free from Foundry and a dog from GW's Lord of the Rings range.

I also dug out this old citadel unicorn that I had in my collection.  Unicorns are heroes with the heal spell, which I think is going to prove useful.

I've gone out and bought these two Pegasi from Foundry's Greek Mythology range which will add some much valued mobility to the force.

And finally here's a pic of how the army stands today.  I've got plenty of Heroes and Monsters, but not enough proper regiments.  The Hunters will be bought up to a full regiment soon and later in the year I'll be getting regiments of Salamanders and Naiads from my kickstarter package, in the meanwhile I'm considering giving some of my old plastic Saurus minis a quick lick of paint to stand in as Salamanders.

Wargames Foundry Greek Mythology Figures For Warhammer Quest

I've slowly been collecting foundry's Greek Mythology range over the last few years and a few weeks ago I placed another order for two of the larger monsters; a Hydra and a Chimaera.  I had an extra incentive to buy them, for as well as being added to my Greek collection they are also intended for use in Warhammer Quest.

As you get to higher levels a lot of larger monster appear and I only really had a couple of Manticores to represent them all.  As well as being cheaper than 'official' GW models they are also a lot smaller, which wouldn't normally be an advantage, but when you're fighting in the close confines of a dungeon smaller minis are actually a win.

The Hydra

The Chimaera

Wargames Foundry have this really wonderful policy of throwing in a couple of free minis with orders, this time I got a free Gorgon and a free Harpy.  I already had the Gorgons in my collection and as there are only three gorgons in Greek myth this bonus one has been painted up for Warhammer Quest too.

And finally this Harpy, who can't be used in Warhammer Quest, but does make a welcome addition to the Greek collection.

Classical Ruined Temple

I was in the new 'The Range' store we have in my town the other day having a bit of a nosey around when I spied this fish tank ornament.  It was a couple of quid and I instantly decided to buy it as I've wanted a couple of bits of classical terrain for a while to accompany my ancient/mythological Greek collection.

Obviously it's the wrong colour, and there are some bubbles in it, but a very quick repaint and I have a rather nifty little terrain piece.

Spartan Games 40mm Cyclops

I've finally painted something not for my alpha legion army!  Today we have this cyclops from Spartan Games which I got very cheap in the Wayland Games halloween sale.  He's actually in 40mm scale not the 28mm that the rest of my ancient greek stuff is in, but I've bought him like that on purpose as I always imagined the cyclops to be substantially bigger than a normal man.  Anyway it's a nice model which I'm pleased with overall, not to sure of the goat hooves instead of human feet though.

And finally here's a comparison shot a 28mm foundry Odyesseus.

Perseus, Medea and Some More Argonauts

A bit of a break from 40K today as I atempt to clear a few half finished projects off my desk.  First up is my completed unit of argonauts from wargames foundry that you can see above (and the new additions below).  The most inetresting of the bunch is the angel like zetes who is the son of boreas the north wind.  The other nine are pretty standard.

And finally a couple of extra personallities from greek mythology, on the left we have the mighty Perseus holding the head of medusa, and on the left we have the targic figure of medea who helped jason win the golden fleece in colchis.

Jason, Herakles and some Argonauts

Don't worry I've not forgotten that this is supposed to be a hobby blog and today we have my latest mythical Greeks from wargames foundry.  All of which feature in the tale of the argo.  I've bought 3 of the 4 packs of argonauts that foundry do, plus a pack called 'mythical characters' that also features some more argonauts plus perseus that I wanted (although he's not done yet).  I was planning on spreading out the main characters, but in the end I gave in and did jason and herakles first.

Argus, Jason and Polydeuces

Heracles and Hylas

Atalanta and Hypsipyle

Four of the more 'ordinary' argonauts

Foundry Legendary Trojan Heroes

Another pack from foundry's tribes of legend Greek mythology range today, this time the Trojan leaders from the Trojan war.  We get Priam and his two sons Hector and Paris, plus a couple of guards.  Whilst nice models I feel the guards would have been better done as a seperate pack and another couple of Trojan heroes added to this one, Aeneas for certain and possibly Polydamas or Glaucus.  Still I'm pleased with the result.

Foundry Legendary Greek Heroes of The Trojan War

The next bunch of my foundry ancient greek figures are finished, this time the Greek leaders from the Trojan War.  There is more than a little bit of resemblance between these figures and the characters as depicted in the movie 'Troy', not that I think thats a bad thing, 'Troy' will get a lot more watches than the Illiad gets reads and makes them all more instantly reconisable.

The Heroes

Agamemnon, King of Mycenae, Leader of the Greek Army

Menelaus, King of Sparta, brother of Agamemnon, husband of Helen

Achillies, Demi-God, Leader of the Myrmidons

Ajax the Greater, King of Salamis

Wily Odysseus, King of Ithaca
