New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he and his wife have received death threats following public statements they made regarding Israel and the war in Gaza.

Yesterday, on the latest National March for Palestine in London, this particular group of campaigners, Holocaust Survivors and Descendants against the Gaza Genocide, highlighted, as they always do, the absolute hypocrisy of any Jewish people anywhere supporting Israel’s ongoing genocide of the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip.
The group includes two child Holocaust survivors, Stephen Kapos and Agnes Kory, seated in the centre of the photo, and numerous other descendants of Holocaust survivors, and their message is irrevocably powerful.
They condemn Israel’s ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip, they compare their own experiences of Nazi oppression to the oppression currently inflicted on the Palestinians, they believe that “Never again” means “Never again for anyone”, and they take part in every protest to actively counter claims that the pro-Palestine marches are inherently antisemitic or represent “no-go zones” for Jewish people.

I have worked with the ICC (and moreso the ICTY) in the past, and I know firsthand how important its mission is. The Court exists because war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide should never be beyond accountability simply because the perpetrators are powerful. Justice is not perfect, but abandoning it is infinitely worse.
If your response to investigations into atrocities is to threaten the investigators rather than confront the crimes, you've lost sight of what the rule of law is supposed to mean.
The ICC is not the enemy. Impunity is.

A. These sanctions are a disaster. First of all, they’re a shock to us as professionals doing our work. Secondly, they don’t [bode] well for the course of international justice. Judges should not be punished for doing their work. Even internet banking becomes difficult, because you can’t update any app [or transfer money]. A. Sanctions do have an impact on Gaza’s population. [They have] an impact because judges feel coerced. It is a threat to the individual judges. It’s a disaster for the victims of international crime.

Q. This past April, the Coalition for the International Criminal Court called on the European Union to protect them from Trump’s sanctions. Has that appeal been sufficiently heeded?
A. They’re trying, especially after the last meeting [of the Assembly of State Parties, the ICC’s management oversight body, composed of representatives of EU states]. This gave us hope that they’re ready to fight for the court. They rallied and condemned the sanctions. But the process is slow and tedious. As you know, the European Union has failed to pass the blocking statute, an instrument to neutralize the effects of foreign sanctions, which would have alleviated the situation.
There have also been judges who dealt with the situation in Ukraine, and who were issued with arrest warrants [and were] tried and convicted in absentia by Russia. That’s another situation we’re dealing with.

I understand that the US has done horrible stuff, and facilitated even more horrible stuff, over its history and I am not diminishing that. What O'Brien's arguing, and I think he's convincing, is that there is no pretext at all for the US bombing a civilian water facility, and the act was premeditated. There is no logic, however Byzantine and/or flawed, through which one could make the case that this was a military necessity. It is, instead, an unequivocal war crime. As O'Brien puts it:

The campaign, titled Nobody Wants to Live Next to a War Criminal, calls on the government to track the movements of British nationals who have served in the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) since October 2023, subject returning fighters to screening at ports of entry and support robust war crimes investigations under domestic and international law.
The campaign follows revelations that at least 2,069 British nationals served in the Israeli army during Israel’s military assault on Gaza. These included 1,686 British-Israelis, 383 triple nationals and 54 so-called “lone soldiers”."

"International Criminal Court issues secret arrest warrants for 5 Israeli officials: Report
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued secret arrest warrants against five Israeli officials, including three politicians and two military personnel, Israeli newspaper Haaretz said on Sunday, Anadolu reports.
The report came as The Hague-based court already issued arrest warrants in November 2024 against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
There has been no immediate statement from the ICC regarding the report. If confirmed, this would bring to seven the number of Israeli officials facing arrests by the court.
The Israeli army has killed more than 72,000 people, mostly women and children, and injured over 172,000 in a two-year war on the Gaza Strip since October 2023.
The army continues its attacks despite a ceasefire that took effect on Oct. 10, 2025, killing over 870 people and injuring more than 2,540 others, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry."

The Israeli military killed two UNICEF-contracted truck drivers at a water point in northern Gaza Strip, forcing the UN agency to suspend its operations in the area, UNICEF said.
Two other people were also injured in the attack that occurred at the Mansoura water filling point in Gaza City, UNICEF said in a statement.
UNICEF said the point is being used multiple times a day to keep providing hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza City with clean water from the Mekorot water supply line.
The agency said it suspended onsite activities until security conditions in the area are restored.
