So apparently #Trump has halted the bombing campaign on #Iran again, and Iran has responded by immediately ceasing attacks, leading to an effective #ceasefire without any negotiations. I find it darkly amusing how straightforward this whole situation is, and how clear it makes it that this is all unnecessary: literally all he has to do is stop attacking them. The only reason the #WarOnIran isn't over yet is because he got into it in the first place and now he needs to be able to claim he "won" something.
It's exactly the same as #Putin's situation in #Ukraine: a stupid despot has dragged #Russia into a stupid #war of imperialism, and it literally can only end when he stops attacking, but #politics mean that he desperately needs to have some sort of "win".

Iran’s Supreme Leader Is Dead. The War Didn’t End With Him.
Ali Khamenei is dead, and the two things happening on either side of that fact are not the two things Western coverage keeps trying to merge into one story. On one side: PMOI Resistance Units launched a nationwide campaign of defiance on 10 July, following what the same outlets describe as lavish, militarised state funeral ceremonies for a man whose regime spent decades disappearing and executing its own dissidents. On the other side: the United States is now nine consecutive nights into a bombing campaign that has nothing to do with Iranian civil society and everything to do with a strait oil needs to move through. These are not the same story wearing two faces. One is Iranians deciding, on their own terms, what comes after a dead theocrat. The other is a foreign military using the resulting instability as cover to keep dropping ordnance on Bushehr and Jask.
I will not perform grief for Khamenei, and I will not pretend the Islamic Republic’s cruelty toward its own population, including the Muslims and ethnic minorities it has repressed hardest, is somehow beside the point. It isn’t. But cruelty by a government toward its own people has never once been the actual criterion the US applies before deciding whether to bomb a country, and this week supplied fresh proof: the UK formally designated the IRGC a terrorist organisation the same week Washington kept striking population centres that have nothing to do with the IRGC’s chain of command, and the same week two US service members were killed and a third went missing in an Iranian strike on a base in Jordan, a retaliation entirely predictable to anyone not invested in pretending bombing campaigns end wars rather than widen them. Designating an organisation a terrorist entity is meant to look like precision.
Nine nights of strikes across seven cities is a message about who gets to survive a transition of power and who doesn’t, sent from very far away by people who will never live with the aftermath.
What I actually want people organising in solidarity to sit with is that you can want the Islamic Republic gone and still refuse to hand that outcome’s authorship to the same states currently starving Gaza and propping up a genocide in the same region. Regime change engineered from outside, at the cost of civilian neighbourhoods, has never once produced the liberation it promises the population living through it. It produces exactly what it is producing right now, dead conscripts, missing soldiers, a resistance movement inside Iran that has to build its own legitimacy while a foreign air force turns its cities into a proving ground for a completely separate geopolitical argument about who controls Hormuz. Iranians deciding their own future and the US bombing Iranian cities are opposite processes that happen to share a timeline, not two chapters of the same liberation story.
Empire is opportunistic before it is anything else. It does not need to invent the crisis it exploits, a dead supreme leader, a domestic resistance movement, a currency in freefall somewhere else on the map; it only needs the crisis to already exist, and it will insert a bombing campaign, arms shipment, or a debt instrument into whatever gap that crisis opens. What gets lost in that insertion, every time, is the population who was actually trying to build something for themselves before the opportunist arrived.
None of that population is waiting on Washington, London, or a supreme leader’s funeral to eat this week, and neither should the people reading this. Below is this week’s mutual aid requests list. It includes requests with no connection to any government’s war aims, just people who need the rent covered or the lights on or a child fed. Move what you can there. Move what you can’t fund further than your own reach. That, unlike anything happening in a briefing room this week, actually reaches someone.

The two countries signed the treaty – also known as the Wadi Araba agreement – normalizing relations despite there being no restoration of Palestinian rights or an end to Israeli military occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip.
Jordan has been described as the second most water scarce country globally.
In 2021, Israel agreed to provide Jordan with an additional 50 million cubic meters annually under a separate three-year agreement, according to Israeli publication Ynet.
Jordan has recently been seeking to extend the agreement for another five years and to increase the additional supply to 80 million cubic meters, Ynet reported.

Renewals stopped
Eli Cohen, Israel’s energy and infrastructure minister, has been renewing the agreement every six months.
“Israeli officials said the extensions came partly in response to US pressure and Jordan’s assistance in intercepting Iranian drones during recent regional hostilities,” according to Ynet.
But this stopped in November 2025, leaving water-stressed Jordan with only the original 50 million cubic meters it is entitled to under the Wadi Araba agreement.
“There is currently no expectation of a signing” of a new deal, Israeli state broadcaster Kan reported earlier this month, citing unnamed sources.
“This has sparked outrage in Jordan, which, according to sources, may respond,” Kan added.
The United Arab Emirates, a staunch ally of Israel, is now encouraging a trilateral summit between the energy ministers of all three countries to discuss the signing of such a deal.

Also under consideration would be the revival of a deal that Jordan backed out of in November 2023, which would have seen it provide Israel with solar-generated electricity in exchange for desalinated water.
Jordan and Israel had signed a memorandum of understanding on the deal along with the UAE in 2021.
At the time, thousands protested the deal in Amman and Jordanian security forces beat and arrested demonstrators.
“We will not sign this agreement any longer,” Jordan’s foreign minister Ayman Safadi told Al Jazeera in November 2023 as his government changed course.
“Can you imagine a Jordanian minister sitting next to an Israeli minister to sign a water and electricity agreement, all while Israel continues to kill children in Gaza?” Safadi added, just a month into Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
Now, with the genocide well into its third year, what was once unimaginable to the Jordanian foreign minister is precisely what the prospective meeting in Abu Dhabi would bring about.
It may not necessarily involve a photo op as was the case in November 2021.
But Jordan has grown reliant enough on the supply that King Abdullah II reportedly linked a possible meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in March to a resolution of the water agreement, among other issues.

Deepening dependence?
Jordanian activists and commentators have long-warned that growing water or energy dependence on Israel could end up providing Israel with leverage to achieve other ends.
A persistent fear among Jordanian leaders – that the 1994 treaty has not managed to allay – is that Israel will act on longstanding Zionist ambitions of turning Jordan into an “alternative homeland” for the Palestinians, upending the country’s current political order.
US President Donald Trump revived those fears upon returning to office last year, when he called for the ethnic cleansing of the entire Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip to Jordan and Egypt.
“You’re talking about probably a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing and say, ‘You know, it’s over,’” Trump said.

The Super El Nino of 1877
On Thursday, forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) raised the likelihood to 81% chances of a Super El Nino beginning this fall, making it potentially the most powerful El Nino since 1950. There have been five Super El Ninos since then. They can be quite expensive, and deadly, with effects lingering on for years after ocean water temperatures have returned to normal. Global economic losses from the 1982-83 El Nino are estimated to be $4.1 trillion in today’s dollars and losses for the 1997-98 event are believed to be $5.7 trillion, in both cases played out over the five-year period during and following the El Niño event. The 1997-98 event also caused 16% of the world’s ocean reefs to die-off. For the impending Super El Nino, Goldman-Sachs is predicting a nearly 16% increase in global food prices that could extend into 2028, exacerbated by already heavily inflated food prices due to Trump & Netanyahu’s war on Iran.

El Ninos can increase the risk of wildfires, cyclones, mass species die-offs, major economic disruptions, and civil conflict. They can cause famine because they tend to significantly reduce rainfall from monsoons, and tropical storms, causing drought and crop failures in much of the global south. Other regions, however, can have dramatic increases in rainfall and flooding. And others, still, tend to suffer from extreme heat and mass casualties from dehydration and heat stroke. They can also increase infectious disease outbreaks, particularly water-borne diseases like cholera, and insect-borne diseases like malaria, dengue fever, zika. In 1878, a yellow fever epidemic began in New Orleans, leading to the deaths of 5,000 people. It was likely exacerbated by the 1877-78 El Nino. 40,000 people fled New Orleans (20% of the population), spreading the disease throughout the Mississippi Valley. 5,000 more people died in Memphis. And thousands more died in the state of Mississippi. Trade was completely halted, resulting in mass starvation and riots. A mega-El Nino is believed to have contributed to the Permian Extinction, largest of the Big Five Mass Extinctions. In this event. 57% of all biological families, 81% of all marine species, and 70% of terrestrial vertebrate species went extinct. Preceding this mass extinction were a number of massive volcanic eruptions that released so much sulfur and carbon dioxide (atmospheric CO2 rose from ~400 ppm to over 2,500 ppm) that global temperatures rose dramatically, while simultaneously acidifying the oceans and depleting them of oxygen. Simultaneous with this, however, there was a mega-El Nino, which exacerbated the mass die-offs. Today, CO2 levels are already over ~400 ppm, and rising, causing annual increases in climate disasters, like heat waves, deadly storms, wildfires, droughts, famines, increased infectious diseases, mass migration, and civil conflicts. The most devastating documented Super El Nino was the 1877–1878 event, which killed over 50 million people, about 3-4% of the global population (that would translate to 250 million people today). The majority of deaths were due to drought-related famines such as the Great Famine of 1876–1878 in India, the Northern Chinese Famine of 1876–1879, and the Grande Seca in Brazil. In the U.S., it was known as the “year without a winter” because of unseasonably warm weather in some regions. This is not to say that the Super El Nino of 2026-2027 will see the same level of destruction and mass casualties. Several factors today, however, are making many people nervous about the impending Super El Nino. First, there is a much higher rise in ocean water temperatures this time around, the highest ever recorded, in fact. Another factor is the already dire situation with global food supplies resulting from the wars in Iran (reduction in fertilizer exports) and Ukraine (loss of a major grain supplier). And another is the already stressed climate system, which could worsen the risk of droughts, heatwaves, wildfires, floods, and infectious disease.
It’s impossible to predict how bad this Super El Nino will be for places like California, where increased rains are predicted, but don’t always come through. For example, the 1982-1983 and 1997-1998 El Niño events caused significant increases in rainfall across California, causing flooding and landslides. But the 2015-2016 event produced average rainfall in the north, and below-average conditions in the south. However, if the Westcoast of the U.S. does see a series of atmospheric rivers, a trend that is often associated with El Ninos, it could be at risk for a another megaflood, like that of 1862, when storms inundated much of the land from Oregon to San Diego, creating a vast inland sea, 300 miles long and 20 miles wide, in the middle of the agriculturally critical Central Valley. The state capital in Sacramento was under water for six months, forcing the government to relocate to San Francisco. 33% of California’s state property was destroyed, along with one in every eight private homes. Thousands of people died, possibly up to 1% of California’s entire population.
