buc.ci is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.

This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.

    Although the Mac mini with the Apple M4 chip does have a pretty respectable graphics performance given its small size, it's still nowhere near my boring, old gaming PC.

    I just ran the "Shadow of the Tomb Raider" benchmark on the M4 and managed to get around 25-35fps in a 1440p resolution. Just for comparison, I then booted up my PC and ... well... it managed over 200fps. On 2160p 4K with highest settings. Holy cow! Probably not a fair fight.😅

                                                                                                For this list, I've been trying to focus not so much on the most exciting applications as the ones I use so often I forget they exist -- and Gwenview definitely fits in that category. I literally use it every day.

                                                                                                It's an image/multimedia browsing utility. Ostensibly for KDE, although I routinely use it in XFCE.

                                                                                                In any case, it's very low-maintenance and the fastest way for me to check out a tree of images -- whether they're PR collections or a series of frames in a PNG stream. Helps a lot when I'm looking for an image and can't quite remember what I called the file.

                                                                                                I've tried some other image browsing apps, but this is the one I keep coming back to.

Newer versions moved onto a 'triple-buffering' method which makes it difficult to determine when the actual back/front buffers are flipped

                                                                                                    This is actually a small suite of tools that can be used from the command line, although it also has a GUI interface. Pretty old school software; been around for ages; still very handy.

                                                                                                    Not as powerful as Gimp or Krita for manipulating a single image, but with ImageMagick and a bash script you can make changes en masse ("convert" and "mogrify" -- which does the job in place). You can quickly check the format and size of images from the command line ("identify") or simply pop up the image with "display".

                                                                                                    Finally, with "compose" you can make an image combining multiple images in many different ways, including making a grid with or without labels.

                                                                                                    I don't use it as much as I used to, but it is still the simplest way to check image content from the command line. And it's really the only option when you need to change a whole lot of images at once.

                                                                                                    Also often used on server back ends to manipulate images for display in web applications.

                                                                                                                                Long-overdue and request for : What to use besides ? I don't hate it (I've become used to it) but I object to the name and it has annoyances galore. If I can use something better I will. I'd very much like it to be .

                                                                                                                                My use case: mostly photo editing (though a lot of that has been replaced with Darktable), sometimes making memes or flyers, etc. Occasionally I draw or make something from scratch.

                                                                                                                                What else is there that does these things, and (very important) is better at them, hopefully with a more intuitive, useful interface?

                                                                                                                                  Honestly, besides all the basic economic reasons that this cannot last, the application area is one math theorem away from imploding.

                                                                                                                                  All it'd take is one clever math result demonstrating you don't need absolutely gigantic neural networks trained on mind-bogglingly-huge datasets to achieve the AI goals of most companies, and NVIDIA's hardware dominance evaporates. Why would you spend thousands or tens of thousands of dollars on a GPU that uses 300 Watts of power when you could achieve the same thing with an ASIC or FPGA that uses 3 Watts? This is already true for many applications, but apparently it hasn't been widely realized yet. It'll be hard to ignore if/when it becomes true for the vast majority of applications. Which it could.

                                                                                                                                    Their market valuation jumped by over $200 billion in one quarter. They are reporting profit margins near 75%. This is a broken market--a bubble--and it cannot last. It will burst eventually and it's looking like it could take trillions of dollars with it. Since NVIDIA is largely growing like this because of the widespread use of its hardware in AI / LLM applications, these applications are driving the bubble.

                                                                                                                                    This is very reminiscent of the dot-com bubble, which expanded and then popped when I was in my early 20s.
