cleaning kit and USB stick will turn this old, almost unusable laptop into a new, shiny PC.
It was gathering dust on my daughter’s desk because it gets 30 minutes to boot, and then you must deal with asking you to buy , get subscription, or sell your soul to before you’ll be able to actually do something.

You could say she had a episode in her life : )

I have been using Outlook for literal decades. Microsoft has managed to botch so bad, that I'm now at the stage of not trusting it will do anything I want it to. I canceled a meeting series last week. It's back. I canceled it again today, and now folks are somehow ACCEPTING the cancellation? 30% AI code, indeed. Make it make sense! (This is at work, I have no choice)

There are some somewhat philosophical question in this discussion, e.g.:
          - If an chip is manufactured in , is it an |n chip or a Taiwanese chip?
          - If the main maintainer of an software m (or a foundation supporting the project) is from the , does that mean the project is "american"?
          - If you have a large project (such as a distribution) that contains hundreds of other projects, where is it coming from?

I think ultimately this discussion comes down to: "Who is in control of your device, it's software and your data?"

With software, such as , I'd argue you have much more control of your device and your data than with , , , and all that stuff. That's why is great, even though it's from the .

I proposed because it's your *ticket* out of the ecosystem.

Hi, people. I'm hoping you can help me with a thing with my job: I would like some resources to show to some decision makers, hopefully, showing that allowing sync clients for OneDrive is basically OK and not the security nightmare the CIO believes it is. I believe most useful would be links to industry standards, statements by respected professionals in the field, etc. I don't think my reasoning (even if it came from much mor knowledgeable people) will carry any weight at all.

Context: When I asked to have my sync client authorized so I can synchronize my OneDrive files (for backup, offline work, etc.), this is the CIO's response:

The syncing of University data to non-University owned (.e.g personal) devices is not permitted. I know this adds a layer of difficulty to your process, but there are a few critical reasons why we maintain this posture:

              - Data Loss Prevention: We cannot guarantee the backup or recovery of University files stored on personal hardware.

-Security Posture: On personal devices, we are unable to confirm or maintain essential security standards (like encryption levels or patch management) that protect our network from external threats.

              - Compliance: Our data agreements require that University information remains within a managed and auditable environment.

More context: We (a small university) recently made the jarring switch from suite to , , etc. We aren't being given licenses for actual desktop Office programs, and (lol) we are definitely not being offered institution-managed laptops.

is a bit of a workflow nightmare for doing basic file management stuff through the web interface, and the whole thing breaks down with iffy internet connections--which I often have. I also run mint on my laptop, but I can manage that end of things.

Important: It's possible I'm wrong and sync does introduce all the security problems the CIO cited (above). Honestly, they don't make sense to me, but I'm not an professional; just a person want to my job to not be made more difficult. If the CIO is spitting straight truth and I just need to accept it, please tell me that.

Anyway, if you have links to any resources that might help make my case, I hope you will share them, or keywords I can search to find resources. Thanks a lot in advance.

                    is deeply fucking annoying.
PowerPoint: If the focus is on certain things in a slide, you can't advance to the next or previous with the up or down arrows; you need PgUp or PgDn.
But when the focus changes, then PgUp and PgDn skip multiple slides.
A consistent workflow is difficult with this shit.

I just saw a post on LinkedIn that Microsoft is raising the price of Office 365 for some users because of new AI features they've added. The increase could be as much as 33%.

Apparently, if you get a message about this price increase and then cancel your subscription, you're magically offered the option to subscribe to "Office 365 Classic", which is the same price and doesn't have the AI features.

I don't pay for an Office 365 subscription so I can't verify if this works, but frankly if I did I'd cancel it right now as a way to get rid of the AI. I'm sharing in case it helps anyone, and I'd love to hear if anyone tries this and if it works.

                      Post is here: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/dr-jeffrey-funk-a979435_technology-innovation-artificialintelligence-activity-7283082705028726784-0pJj/

Oh and as an aside: whenever you come across scammy corporate behavior like this you should report it to the FTC at https://ftc.gov/complaint . That form eventually asks for a bunch of personal information like you're address but you can omit that.
