Ryan Daum

I'm a systems oriented software engineer living in the countryside outside Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

I build performance-critical infrastructure, mostly in Rust, with a particular interest in virtual machines, secure sandboxes, storage engines, embedded Linux, and close-to-the-metal systems more generally.

I have 25+ years in software, including a decade at Google working across embedded platforms, consumer hardware, and large-scale serving infrastructure.

These days I run Timbran Consulting and work a lot on open systems for programmable, secure, collaborative digital spaces.

What I've been building lately

  • Mica — a programming language and runtime for long-lived shared systems built around facts, rules, objects, and inference.
  • mooR — a modern, multithreaded reconstruction of LambdaMOO: a language runtime, compiler/VM, transactional storage engine, and web platform for shared programmable worlds.
  • rart — an Adaptive Radix Tree for Rust, including single-threaded and versioned concurrent implementations.
  • micromeasure — a Rust microbenchmarking harness that measures hardware counters and energy use as well as elapsed time.
  • Pagebox — a high-performance paged storage substrate with a buffer pool, concurrent B+ tree, write-ahead log, and crash recovery. Still experimental.

Other experiments

  • Ethica — an interactive, graph-backed reader for Spinoza's Ethics.
  • fast-telemetry — cache-friendly, low-contention metrics and tracing for performance-sensitive Rust services, developed with the Eden team.

In this house, we believe...

Relations are more expressive than "objects"; over-abstraction leads to complexity; ideas are material; and taxonomies are imposed not intrinsic.
