CNAME Tells GitHub Pages the custom domain is databarn.org

Hosting setup

1. GitHub Pages

Repo → Settings → Pages:

  • Source: Deploy from a branch
  • Branch: main, folder / (root)

Then, still under Settings → Pages, set Custom domain to databarn.org and save. That writes/keeps the CNAME file (already committed here, so it should populate on its own). Once the DNS below resolves, check Enforce HTTPS — the certificate is issued automatically by Let's Encrypt and can take up to ~24 hours to appear.

2. DNS at the registrar for databarn.org

An apex (bare) domain needs A/AAAA records pointing at GitHub's Pages servers — a CNAME record is not valid at the apex.

Apex — four A records, host @:

185.199.108.153
185.199.109.153
185.199.110.153
185.199.111.153

Apex — four AAAA records, host @ (recommended, for IPv6):

2606:50c0:8000::153
2606:50c0:8001::153
2606:50c0:8002::153
2606:50c0:8003::153

www subdomain — one CNAME record, host www, value:

aifarms.github.io.

GitHub redirects www.databarn.orgdatabarn.org automatically once both are configured.

If the registrar supports ALIAS/ANAME/flattened-CNAME records at the apex, pointing that at aifarms.github.io works too and survives any future change to GitHub's IPs.

3. Verify

dig +short databarn.org            # expect the four 185.199.x.153 addresses
dig +short www.databarn.org        # expect aifarms.github.io
curl -sI https://databarn.org | head -1

DNS propagation is usually minutes but can take up to an hour. If Pages reports "Domain does not resolve to the GitHub Pages server", the records have not propagated yet — wait and re-save the custom domain.

4. Optional: verify the domain to prevent takeover

Org → Settings → Pages → Add a domain produces a TXT record (_github-pages-challenge-aifarms.databarn.org). Adding it stops anyone else's GitHub account from claiming databarn.org if this repo is ever deleted. Worth doing.

The NSF proposal (BARN - IDSS .docx) and the visual identity guide PDF sit in this working directory but are .gitignored — anything committed here is served publicly.
