Did you Know? Both Pokémon Red and Jp Green had their own Super GameBoy palettes that tinted the entire game slightly Red or Green? Unfortunately it seems Jp Blue was built off of Red, and then they just forgot about this color tinting before Blue's release, just reusing the Red one twice; and thus we never got the Green palette overseas. Every town across Kanto had their colors slightly shifted, except Cinnabar Island for some reason, but since GameFreak also tinted the global shade of white in their release's namesake color, no region is unscathed.
This oversight stands out even more when you remember that Blue got it's own custom Super GameBoy border during it's development.
Using Rotational Palette Triangulation, I plotted the colors of Red and Green's palettes, calculated the offsets from the two know data points, rotated the hue bias depending on rotation, and made a hypothetical Blue Super GameBoy palette that fits the patterns established in Red and Green, and later Yellow.
(Screenshots of Pokemon Green are from Pokemon Green (UE) International, using an optional patch that keeps the overworld tileset the same as Red & Blue. The intent of the screen shots are to compare and contrast color palettes.)
Most towns recieve a slight hue shift, but I wouldn't blame someone for not noticing at a first glance. It's interesting to note that Pallet Town is bathed in Green, Blue, or in this case Red; depending on what version you are playing. (Also interesting how bright and overexposed Yellow looks in comparsion when using it's Super GameBoy palette instead of it's GBC one.)
Apply IPS patch to a clean Pokémon: Blue Version (UE) [S][!].gb
This is what I, personally, believe to be the best interputation of what a 3rd palette for Gen 1's Kanto to be, and what most casual fans would want when thinking of a blue tinted Pokémon Blue.
Download and use the patch with the "-Core" tag. Both .ips and .bps files have been provided for your convenience; either will work.
Q: What if I liked the Super GameBoy borders of Red and Green more? What if GameFreak stayed consistant when making Blue?
A: I too wondered what how the trio of games would look like with similar borders, so I came up with this:
I wanted to bring Pikachu and Clefairy forward from the Red and Green borders being the cute mascots they are. Then I drew out some pixel art for Jigglypuff and Oddish based off past official art. Why them? Dunno, just wanted to? Didn't feel like drawing something harder? Regardless, due to their sprite art being shorter, I was able to sneak in the tops of the old Kangaskhan and Rhydon as cards hidden being the visible ones in the unused tiles without overwriting anything that is/was used in Jp Blue.
For those who want the Super GameBoy border styles of Red & Green, use a patch with the "-SGB_Border" tag.
