system.top snapshots never refresh
When a client repeats system.top with identical parameters, this branch returns the result cached by the first request instead of capturing current process state, causing process lists, resource values, and window annotations to remain frozen until an unrelated full snapshot publication discards the entry.

Addressed in 82da670: volatile entries now carry per-entry monotonic publication timestamps. system.top hits expire after 500 ms (system.memory 2 s, surface.read_text 100 ms), so repeated polls refresh off-main rather than remaining cached indefinitely; focused expiry coverage is included.

Consolidate the preauthorization deadline onto one owner.
The deadline is now represented three times: deadlineUptimeNanoseconds (polled in nextLine), deadlineTask (a Task.sleep that finishes the stream), and limitsActive (a lock that gates the task). The reader already owns a DispatchSourceTimer for idle deadlines. Schedule the preauthorization deadline on that same timer source. That removes the Task.sleep, the extra lock, and the third copy of the deadline state.
As per coding guidelines: "In non-test Swift application and runtime code, flag Thread.sleep, usleep, sleep, Task.sleep, DispatchQueue.asyncAfter, timers, and polling loops used for synchronization, retry backoff, keepalives, readiness waits, or delayed coordination."

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value
Refill discards the sub-interval remainder.
refill sets lastRefillNanoseconds = current after granting elapsed / refillIntervalNanoseconds tokens. The leftover elapsed % refillIntervalNanoseconds is dropped, so the bucket refills slightly slower than the configured rate under sustained polling. Advance the timestamp by the consumed whole intervals instead.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value
Queued jobs keep their descriptor open with no admission deadline.
A job can wait in pendingJobs indefinitely while 32 long-lived connections hold every slot. The queued client sees no response and no error, and its descriptor stays open until the peer gives up. The bound of 64 caps the leak, so this is not a resource exhaustion risk, but consider recording the enqueue time and dropping jobs that exceed a bounded wait so the client receives a fast close instead of an unbounded stall.

Preserve monotonicity across publish and publishResponse. The refresh path reads generation and publishes the increment later, while socket workers can call publishResponse between those operations. A worker can advance the store to G + 2 before the refresh publishes stale G + 1, which regresses generation and can overwrite newer responses. Make publication assign or validate the generation atomically.

Apple Foundation JSONSerialization jsonObject number NSDecimalNumber exact decimal representation NSNumber
💡 Result:
The Foundation class JSONSerialization does not guarantee a specific numeric type when deserializing JSON numbers, and you cannot rely on it to produce an NSDecimalNumber for every input [1]. When JSONSerialization parses a numeric value from JSON, it attempts to represent the number using the most appropriate underlying type, typically by checking if the value fits into standard integer or floating-point types [1][2][3]. The internal logic generally follows this hierarchy: 1. Integer Types: It first attempts to parse the number as an Int64 or UInt64 if it has no decimal or exponent components and fits within those ranges [2][3]. 2. NSDecimalNumber: It may return an NSDecimalNumber if the number has more than 17 digits, an exponent between -128 and 127, and can be successfully initialized as a Decimal [2][3]. This is an implementation detail that can change and is not a guaranteed behavior for all decimal numbers [1][2]. 3. Double: If the number does not fit the above criteria, it typically falls back to a standard Double [2][3]. Because JSONSerialization does not know the intended type of the number during deserialization, it chooses a representation based on the string format of the JSON number [4]. Consequently, using JSONSerialization to preserve exact decimal precision is unreliable [1]. If you require exact decimal representation (e.g., for financial data), you should not assume the output will be an NSDecimalNumber [1]. To ensure precision, a common practice is to serialize decimal numbers as strings in your JSON [1]. Alternatively, if you receive a number as an NSNumber, you can attempt to convert it using [NSDecimalNumber decimalNumberWithDecimal:[number decimalValue]], but be aware that if the original JSON was parsed into a Double, the precision may have already been lost before the conversion occurs [1][4].

NSDecimalNumber description trailing zeros JSONSerialization parses decimal JSON number NSDecimalNumber
💡 Result:
When working with NSDecimalNumber and JSONSerialization, it is important to understand that JSONSerialization does not have a native, consistent mapping for decimal types, and NSDecimalNumber's string representation behavior often complicates data interchange [1][2][3]. NSDecimalNumber Description and Trailing Zeros The description method of NSDecimalNumber (and its parent class NSNumber) is designed for general-purpose string representation and does not strictly preserve trailing zeros [2]. When you call description on an NSDecimalNumber, it often formats the output based on internal logic that may strip trailing zeros [2]. Because JSONSerialization relies on these underlying types when processing objects, you cannot assume that a trailing zero in an NSDecimalNumber object will be preserved when that object is serialized into a JSON string [1][4]. JSONSerialization Behavior JSONSerialization does not provide a type hint mechanism to distinguish between Double and Decimal during deserialization [5][3]. Its behavior is as follows: - Parsing Priority: JSONSerialization attempts to parse JSON numbers into the most efficient type available (e.g., integer types for whole numbers, then Double, and finally NSDecimalNumber for values exceeding double precision or specific criteria) [1][6][7]. - Precision Loss: Because it defaults to Double for most numbers, precision loss is common [1][8]. Even when NSDecimalNumber is used, the conversion process often happens through intermediate representations that may not maintain the exact trailing zero count you require [2][5]. Recommendations If maintaining exact precision and trailing zeros is critical for your application (e.g., for currency or high-precision financial data): 1. Use String Representation: The most reliable way to pass precise decimal values, including trailing zeros, through JSON is to encode them as strings (e.g., "10.50" instead of 10.5) [9]. 2. Custom Serialization: If you must use numeric JSON types, you may need to implement custom serialization logic (e.g., using NSDecimalNumberHandler to explicitly round and scale values before serialization) to ensure they are formatted as desired before they are processed by JSONSerialization [10][4]. 3. Avoid Double: Never convert high-precision decimals to a Double or float64 intermediate type, as this inherently causes precision loss before serialization even begins [8].

Make numeric JSONValue cases distinct in CanonicalJSON.
ControlRequestParser can preserve Foundation numbers as .int or .decimal, but CanonicalJSON.string maps .int(1) and .decimal("1") to the same key. The snapshot store uses this key for both publication and lookup, so one response can satisfy a request with different typed params. Prefix numeric values with stable case tags and add a regression test for this collision.

Store and remove the notification observers, or explain why they outlive the controller.
socketReadSnapshotObservers holds five block-based observers that the type never removes. Block-based observers registered with addObserver(forName:object:queue:using:) are retained by NotificationCenter until they are removed explicitly. Each block captures self weakly, so the controller can still deallocate, but the observer tokens and their blocks stay registered for the process lifetime and keep firing scheduleSocketReadSnapshotRefresh() on a nil self. If TerminalController is a process-lifetime singleton this is harmless; add a short comment stating that. Otherwise remove the tokens in deinit.

Run the legacy event stream outside ControlClientWorkerPool. handleEventsStreamRequest runs inline in one of 32 detached jobs and repeatedly blocks in CmuxEventSubscription.next(timeout:), so concurrent subscriptions can starve other socket and main-actor work. Also call SocketTransport.configureBlocking(_:) before the loop. ControlClientAsyncLineReader sets O_NONBLOCK, and SocketTransport.writeAll returns false on EAGAIN, which can terminate streams under backpressure.

Every topology notification rebuilds all eleven read payloads on the main actor.
publishSocketReadSnapshot() runs window.list, workspace.list, surface.list, pane.list, pane.surfaces, system.identify, and system.tree on each refresh. system.tree alone walks every window, workspace, pane, and surface. The refresh is triggered by workspaceCurrentDirectoryDidChange and workspaceTitleDidChange, which fire on ordinary shell activity such as each cd report. The cost per notification is therefore proportional to the full topology, on the main actor, for a signal that affects one workspace.
At the ~1000-workspace scale this project targets, a burst of pwd reports turns into repeated full-topology walks on the main thread. Consider marking only the affected methods dirty and rebuilding those entries, or debouncing the refresh with a bounded interval instead of rebuilding everything on the next actor turn.
As per coding guidelines: "Avoid repeated full scans, sorting, filtering, or per-item nested scans over scalable collections in production code, especially in UI, event-driven, backend, and persistence paths."

Stale topology answers can persist indefinitely. The read snapshot is treated as authoritative for workspace, pane, and surface identity with no freshness bound, while invalidation is best-effort and can drop an update. Either failure alone produces a stale answer; together they make it permanent until an unrelated notification fires.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔴 Critical | 🏗️ Heavy lift
The focus-allowance stack is thread-local but now spans await.
withSocketCommandPolicyAsync pushes the allowance onto Thread.current.threadDictionary, awaits body(), and pops in a defer. Swift concurrency does not pin a task to a thread across a suspension point. The push and the pop can therefore run on different cooperative-pool threads. Three concrete failures follow:
- The pushing thread keeps a frame forever. A later socket command that resumes on that thread reads a stale
trueand is allowed to mutate in-app focus. - The resuming thread pops a frame that a different connection pushed, so that other connection loses its allowance mid-command.
v2MainAsyncat Line 297 snapshotscurrentSocketCommandFocusAllowanceStack()from whichever thread resumed the caller, so the main actor can observe another connection's allowance.
The pool admits 32 concurrent connection tasks that share the cooperative-pool threads, so this interleaving is reachable under normal load, not only in tests. Focus allowance decides whether a socket command may steal window/workspace focus, so a wrong value is a user-visible correctness bug.
Carry the stack as task-scoped state instead of thread-scoped state. @TaskLocal follows the task across suspensions and across child tasks, and v2MainAsync can then forward the value explicitly.

Replace the threadDictionary-based focus-allowance handling in
withSocketCommandPolicyAsync and currentSocketCommandFocusAllowanceStack with
`@TaskLocal` task-scoped state that survives await and propagates to child tasks.
Scope the appended allowance only around body execution, and update v2MainAsync
to capture and explicitly forward the task-local stack to the MainActor without
relying on the resuming thread.
