Fixes #12756.

Problem

cmux events --cursor-file … --reconnect exited with
Failed to configure socket receive timeout (Invalid argument, errno 22) exactly when a backlog replay handed off to live streaming. As the follow-up comment on the issue measured, any replay ≥ 1 event triggers it (cursor == latest_seq survives, latest_seq - 1 dies), and it also hits long-lived --reconnect sessions that re-attach with events queued.

Root cause analysis

The only SO_RCVTIMEO call in the streaming path is configureReceiveTimeout(45), and readStreamLine re-issued it before every single frame read. During a replay burst that is thousands of redundant setsockopt calls with values that are provably in range (the same call succeeded for every prior frame — so the failure is not value-range; the reporter's kernel table also shows out-of-range values surface as EDOM(33), not EINVAL(22), on this platform). The failure signature — same arguments, succeeds N times, fails at the replay→live transition — matches a redundant reconfiguration racing the socket state churn of the replay burst.

Change

Two commits (failing test first):

  1. test(events) — the reconnect loop must classify a receive-timeout reconfiguration failure as transient.
  2. fix(events):
    • configureReceiveTimeout no-ops when the timeout is already configured with the same value (tolerance dedupe previously existed only in configureResponseReceiveTimeout; it now lives in the base call, so the events line reader configures once per connection and never reconfigures mid-burst).
    • "failed to configure socket receive timeout" / errno 22 join the transient markers, so --reconnect honours its contract and reconnects instead of exiting if the configuration ever does fail.

Verification

  • New EventStreamTransientErrorTests (expected red on commit 1: the EINVAL message was classified fatal; green on commit 2). Not executed locally — Linux host without a Swift toolchain; CI is the first run.
  • Behavioral walk-through of the failing repro from the issue: ack (gap:true) → replayed frames read with zero further setsockopt calls (dedupe) → transition to live streaming no longer reconfigures; if any configuration error does surface, --reconnect reconnects with a fresh socket instead of exiting.

Summary by cubic

Fixes cmux events --reconnect exiting with Failed to configure socket receive timeout (Invalid argument, errno 22) when a backlog replay hands off to live streaming.

  • Moves the reconnect decision into CmuxControlSocket as EventStreamReconnectPolicy, and removes the CLI-hosted tests that never compiled.
  • Types receive-timeout configuration failures (EINVAL only) instead of matching message text, so malformed frames that merely mention errno stay fatal; only the events path gets the typed kind, other commands keep the original "Socket read error" text.
  • Keeps reading frames buffered before a peer-closed EINVAL so they are delivered, then ends with "Event stream closed" for --reconnect to retry.
  • Skips setsockopt when the timeout is already set, and clears the timeout cache on connect failure so retries configure a fresh socket.

Written for commit 68f5bb6. Summary will update on new commits.

Review in cubic

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Event streams now reconnect after temporary connection failures, including receive-timeout configuration errors.
    • Permanent protocol and invalid-frame errors remain non-retryable, avoiding unnecessary reconnect attempts.
    • Socket retries now correctly apply the requested receive timeout, and redundant timeout reconfiguration is avoided when the setting has not meaningfully changed.

…reconnect

Regression test for manaflow-ai#12756: the reconnect loop treats the socket
receive-timeout configuration failure as fatal today, so a replay
burst that trips the SO_RCVTIMEO reconfiguration exits the process
instead of reconnecting.
manaflow-ai#12756: cmux events --reconnect exited with 'Failed to configure
socket receive timeout (Invalid argument, errno 22)' exactly when a
backlog replay handed off to live streaming. The line reader
re-issued SO_RCVTIMEO setsockopt before every single frame read, so
a replay burst spent thousands of redundant reconfigurations in the
window where the kernel can refuse one.

- configureReceiveTimeout now no-ops when the timeout is already
configured with the same value, so a stream configures once and
  never reconfigures mid-burst
- the reconfiguration failure is classified as a transient for the
reconnect loop, matching the --reconnect forever contract: a
socket-config hiccup now reconnects instead of exiting

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The CLI avoids redundant socket receive-timeout configuration and reports configuration failures with a typed failure kind. Event-stream error handling uses a shared policy to classify transient failures, with tests covering connection markers and protocol-frame errors.

Changes

Event stream timeout handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Receive-timeout handling
CLI/CLIError.swift, CLI/cmux.swift
Socket timeout configuration skips reconfiguration when the stored timeout is within tolerance. Configuration failures carry a typed failure kind, which the wrapper preserves. The connect failure path calls close() to clear socket state.
Event-stream error classification
Packages/macOS/CmuxControlSocket/Sources/CmuxControlSocket/Wire/EventStreamReconnectPolicy.swift, CLI/CMUXCLI+Events.swift, Packages/macOS/CmuxControlSocket/Tests/CmuxControlSocketTests/EventStreamReconnectPolicyTests.swift
The CLI delegates error classification to EventStreamReconnectPolicy. Typed receive-timeout configuration failures are transient. Other errors are classified using message and untyped-description markers. Tests cover transient connection errors and fatal protocol-frame errors.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 7.14% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 14 functions across 5 files. (1 skipped: 1 too large.)

Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization

Explanation

The PR materially changes a user-visible error path without localization. Before this PR, configureResponseReceiveTimeout converted all configureReceiveTimeout failures to localized cli.socket.error.socketRead (Socket read error). The new typed CLIError catch rethrows the existing raw message Failed to configure socket receive timeout (..., errno ...), which has no localized API or catalog entry. Resources/Localizable.xcstrings contains no receive-timeout key.

Resolution

Keep the typed socketFailureKind for reconnect classification, but create the user-facing receive-timeout message through String(localized:defaultValue:) or an equivalent localized formatter. Add the matching key and translated values to Resources/Localizable.xcstrings for every locale supported by that catalog. Do not expose the raw English diagnostic from the typed catch.

CodeRabbit review follow-up: the substring markers could classify a
malformed event frame whose *content* mentions 'errno 22' as
transient, letting --reconnect retry a permanent protocol error
forever. configureReceiveTimeout now throws a typed
.receiveTimeoutConfiguration failure and the reconnect loop
classifies that type; message markers are removed. Adds malformed-
frame cases carrying both markers to pin protocol errors as fatal.

Addressed in 98efa0d: the classification is now typed (CLIError.socketFailureKind == .receiveTimeoutConfiguration thrown from configureReceiveTimeout) instead of substring matching, so a malformed frame whose content mentions errno 22 stays fatal. Added malformed-frame cases carrying both markers to pin that behavior.

Reset the receive-timeout cache when a Unix socket connect fails.

The Unix connect failure path closes the descriptor directly but keeps lastConfiguredReceiveTimeout. A retry can create a new socket, skip SO_RCVTIMEO, and allow a later Darwin.read to block instead of returning a timeout.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add a regression test for the actual socket error path.

receiveTimeoutReconfigurationFailureIsTransient constructs the final CLIError and calls isTransientEventStreamError. It does not execute CMUXSocket.send or configureResponseReceiveTimeout. The related ping tests assert socket routing and output only.

If the wrapper again creates a CLIError without .receiveTimeoutConfiguration, the classifier can return false and --reconnect can stop, while these tests still pass. Add a test that forces the receive-timeout configuration failure through the authentication/send path and asserts the preserved socket failure kind and reconnect behavior.

The replay-to-live stream read uses configureReceiveTimeout directly, so this test must not be treated as coverage for that path.

Addressed both minors in d0f2eb8: (1) the Unix connect failure path now uses the full close() cleanup so a retry reconfigures SO_RCVTIMEO on the fresh socket; (2) configureResponseReceiveTimeout is internal and the regression test now drives it on an unconnected socket, asserting the typed .receiveTimeoutConfiguration failure survives the wrapper and classifies as transient.

Reviewed, and thank you! Skipping setsockopt when the timeout is already set, the typed .receiveTimeoutConfiguration error that --reconnect treats as transient, and closing the fd on connect failure all look right, and each CodeRabbit round was addressed. The only conflict was the test group in project.pbxproj, so I merged main in, kept both sides and re-normalized. I also approved CI and turned on auto-merge :)

Now that CI has run, one thing to fix: the new test file doesn't compile in cmuxTests.

cmuxTests/EventStreamTransientErrorTests.swift:22:17: error: 'CMUXCLI' (aka 'CmuxTuiRemoteRouting') cannot be constructed because it has no accessible initializers
cmuxTests/EventStreamTransientErrorTests.swift:47:22: error: cannot find 'SocketClient' in scope

cmuxTests is hosted by the app, so the CLI's types (CMUXCLI, SocketClient, CLIError) aren't visible there. CMUXCLI is even aliased to something else in that target. On main, CLI behavior gets tested one of two ways:

  • Run the cmux binary as a process and check its output, like cmuxTests/CMUXCLIErrorOutputRegressionTests.swift does. You could point cmux events --reconnect at a socket that fails the timeout setup.
  • Move the pure classification into a package and unit-test it there, like Fix cmux events access-denied stream error #10712 did with SocketStreamErrorKind in CmuxControlSocket.

The second is probably less work here: the "is this error transient?" decision is pure logic. The fix itself still looks right to me. I turned auto-merge off until the test builds; push when you're ready and I'll approve CI again :)

…cket

cmuxTests is hosted by the app and cannot see CLI types, so
EventStreamTransientErrorTests.swift never compiled (spotted in review).
Move the "is this event-stream failure transient?" decision into
CmuxControlSocket as EventStreamReconnectPolicy — pure logic over the
typed socket-failure kind and message text — and unit-test it in the
package target, the same shape as manaflow-ai#10712's SocketStreamErrorKind. The CLI
wrapper now only maps CLIError onto the policy; the misplaced cmuxTests
file and its pbxproj wiring are gone (sync-test-wiring --check clean).

The real-socket wrapper check (configureResponseReceiveTimeout rethrowing
the typed failure on an unconnected socket) has no CLI-free equivalent and
leaves the automated suites with this change; the policy tests keep the
transient/fatal matrix, including event content that merely mentions errno
text.

Pushed df04a91 — the failing suite was my mistake: cmuxTests is app-hosted and can't see CLI types. Went with the second option you suggested:

  • The "is this failure transient?" decision now lives in CmuxControlSocket as EventStreamReconnectPolicy — pure logic over a typed EventStreamSocketFailureKind and the message text. The legacy marker list moved verbatim, and the non-CLIError fallback path is an explicit parameter. isTransientEventStreamError is now just the CLIError→policy mapping.
  • Unit tests moved to the package target (EventStreamReconnectPolicyTests): typed-kind transient, event content that merely mentions errno text stays fatal, protocol errors stay fatal, the legacy connection markers, and the untyped-description fallback.
  • cmuxTests/EventStreamTransientErrorTests.swift and its pbxproj wiring are removed (./scripts/sync-test-wiring --check is clean).

One coverage note: the old fourth test drove SocketClient.configureResponseReceiveTimeout on a real unconnected socket to prove the typed failure survives the wrapper. There's no CLI-free home for that (SocketClient is CLI-target), so it leaves the automated suites with this change — happy to add a process-level cmux events --reconnect case later if you want that path pinned.

Verification: no Swift toolchain on this Linux box — scripts/verify-local.py --only swift-syntax reports UNSUPPORTED here, so the package build and tests (swift-package-tests lane) plus the static checks on CI are the first real compile of these files.

Thanks for digging into this, @LuckVd. The dedupe itself looks correct (close() resets the cached value, and you also fixed the connect-failure path that skipped that reset), but I don't think we can land it as is yet:

  • On macOS, setsockopt returns EINVAL once the socket has been shut down in both directions, which for an AF_UNIX socket happens when the peer closes. The arguments are fine (optlen is MemoryLayout<timeval>.size), so this looks like the stream being closed right after the replay, not setsockopt churn.
  • If the peer closes after the ack has been read, the dedupe skips later calls, the buffered frames are read, and read() ends with "Event stream closed", which is already transient. That converges.
  • If the peer closes before the first readStreamLine, that first configureReceiveTimeout(45) is never deduped (connectOnce set the response timeout, not 45). With every .receiveTimeoutConfiguration failure now transient, --reconnect retries with the same cursor about once a second with no output, forever. EBADF and ENOTSOCK would loop the same way.
  • EventStreamReconnectPolicyTests only checks the classification. Nothing reproduces events --cursor-file --reconnect exits with EINVAL (socket receive timeout) when the cursor is older than the retained in-memory log #12756 (ack plus buffered events, then peer close).

What I'd suggest: set the receive timeout once per stream in streamV2, treat EINVAL from that call as "peer closed" (drain what is already buffered, then throw "Event stream closed"), keep EBADF/ENOTSOCK fatal, and add a socket test where the peer writes an ack and one event and then closes. It would also help to find out what closes the stream after a replay (possibly writeEventsStreamLine failing in Sources/CmuxEventStream.swift). Happy to help if you want to take another pass.

macOS rejects SO_RCVTIMEO with EINVAL once the peer has shut an AF_UNIX
socket down, while frames it wrote before closing stay readable. That is
the manaflow-ai#12756 exit after a backlog replay. readStreamLine now tolerates that
EINVAL and keeps reading, so the buffered events are delivered and the
stream then ends with "Event stream closed", which --reconnect retries.

Only EINVAL is typed as .receiveTimeoutConfiguration now, so EBADF or
ENOTSOCK stay fatal instead of looping under --reconnect. Adds a
process-level test with a socket peer that replays an ack and two events
and closes.

Restore configureResponseReceiveTimeout to main's version. Rethrowing the
raw CLIError changed the closed-peer message for every command from
"Socket read error" to the setsockopt text, which
tests/test_cli_socket_operation_deadline.py does not expect. Nothing
needs the typed kind on that path. The peer-close test now also answers
an optional password handshake before the events.stream request.

Merged, thank you @LuckVd! Your dedupe in configureReceiveTimeout is what fixes the replay case: setting SO_RCVTIMEO again before every frame is what hit EINVAL once the server had closed. I added a small follow-up on top: macOS returns EINVAL from setsockopt once the peer has closed an AF_UNIX socket while buffered frames stay readable, so readStreamLine now keeps reading through that EINVAL, only EINVAL is typed as transient (EBADF/ENOTSOCK stay fatal), configureResponseReceiveTimeout keeps its old "Socket read error" message, and a process-level test replays an ack plus two events and closes. Compile admission and package tests were green.

…amespace (#14661)

#13888 added `enum EventStreamReconnectPolicy` with only a static
`isTransient`, which package-conventions-lint rejects as a namespace-type
(scripts/lint_swift_namespaces.py). Every PR touching Packages/ failed that
lint on main.

The inputs become `EventStreamFailure` and the decision its `isTransient`
property. Same markers, same precedence; the CLI wrapper and the package
tests call the new spelling.
