MERS is a real-time ICU monitoring platform that connects legacy bedside medical equipment to a central server and automatically escalates critical patient alerts to on-duty and backup doctors/nurses. This repository contains the Next.js Web Dashboard portion of the MERS ecosystem.
Delays in ICU emergency response—caused by unavailable doctors or communication gaps—lead to critical patient deterioration. Existing hospital systems lack automated escalation, increasing the risk of missed interventions, especially in rural or resource-constrained hospitals with severe nursing shortages. An estimated 1.6 million Indians die annually due to delayed tracking and poor care quality.
MERS is a plug-and-play retrofit IoT bridge paired with a central Web & Mobile Dashboard:
- Connects to legacy ICU monitors via RS232 to extract raw physiological data (ECG, SpO2, HR) with zero equipment replacement.
- Analyzes data at the edge using a local Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS) logic.
- Automatically escalates alerts to primary doctors, and auto-forwards to backup doctors if unacknowledged within 10 minutes.

The hardware edge node acts as a bridge between legacy hospital tech and the modern cloud:
- Microcontroller: ESP32 (Wi-Fi/BLE enabled) for local data parsing and threshold anomaly detection.
- Level Shifting: MAX3232 IC converts legacy RS232 signals (-15V to +15V) down to TTL (3.3V/5V) for the ESP32.
- Input Architecture: Standard DB9 serial port plugs directly into bedside monitors.
- Power: 5V standard power input.
This web repository is built on a highly modern, fast, and responsive stack:
- Framework: Next.js 15 (App Router) + React 19
- Styling: Tailwind CSS + Glassmorphism UI + Custom Keyframe Animations
- Typography: Space Grotesk (Google Fonts) for a modern, futuristic medical HUD feel.
- State Management: React Context API for global Authentication & Alerts state.
- Icons: Lucide React / Custom SVGs.
- Real-Time Monitoring: Live feed of active alerts sorted by severity (Critical / High / Medium).
- Alert Triage: 1-click Acknowledge, Details, and Call functions.
- Automated Escalation Timers: Countdown indicators for when an alert will bypass to a backup doctor.
- Duty Toggles: Doctors can instantly toggle "On Duty" / "Off Duty" status to control alert routing.
- Glassmorphic Cyber-HUD Design: Aesthetic, high-contrast, cyberpunk-inspired UI tailored for late-night ward monitoring.
