This PR adds buttons to navigate to parent App/AppSet from App/AppSet page. Concept of button borrowed from the stale PR #19489:

No parent of AppSet
No parent of AppSet

App as parent of AppSet
App as parent of AppSet

Appset as parent of App
Appset as parent of App

App of Apps
App of Apps

No parent of App
No parent

Closes #19236

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a Parent action to Application and ApplicationSet details, linking to the parent when available. The action is disabled when parent information is missing.
    • Parent links account for namespaces and configured resource-tracking settings.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Resource menus now distinguish Applications with the same name in different namespaces.
  • Documentation
    • Documented how to navigate from an ApplicationSet’s details page to its parent Application.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Application details now resolve parent resources from owner references or configured tracking metadata. Parent actions navigate to the resolved resource. Resource menu selection also matches the Application namespace.

Changes

Parent navigation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve parent identity
ui/src/app/applications/components/application-details/application-parent.ts, ui/src/app/applications/components/application-details/application-parent.test.tsx
Parent resolution checks ApplicationSet owner references first. Otherwise, it uses configured tracking metadata and rejects invalid identities and self-links. Parent paths encode the namespace and name. Tests cover resolution rules and parent-kind-specific paths.
Add parent navigation actions
ui/src/app/applications/components/application-details/application-details.tsx, ui/src/app/applications/components/application-details/application-parent.test.tsx, docs/user-guide/application-set-ui.md
Application details menus use auth settings to resolve the parent and navigate when one is available. Tests cover menu actions, disabled state, and metadata updates. The user guide describes the ApplicationSet Parent control.
Match resource menus by namespace
ui/src/app/applications/components/utils.tsx, ui/src/app/applications/components/utils.test.tsx
Resource menu selection now requires the Application node name and namespace to match the details-page Application. Tests cover matching and different namespaces.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 39f9b

The change adds Parent navigation and tightens application menu selection by namespace. No concrete merge-blocking risk was identified in the supplied material.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 39f9b

Parent links remain internal, and access to their destinations is permission-checked. Namespace-aware menus improve resource identification. An existing resource-action ambiguity remains for same-named Applications in different namespaces, but no new authorization bypass or materially broader mutation authority was established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A principal able to influence displayed ownership or tracking metadata can influence the parent link's destination within the existing Application/ApplicationSet routes. Access remains bounded by destination permissions; the inspected path does not transfer credentials or grant additional authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — An existing resource-action shortcut recognizes an Application by group, kind, and name without comparing the requested resource namespace. A same-named node in another namespace can therefore resolve actions against the current Application. Authorization still checks that current Application. The previous tree menu already offered its auto-sync mutation, and unchanged resource details use the same generic action loader; materially increased security exposure from this PR was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Application-resource deletion passes the selected resource's name and namespace to the Application deletion API, which checks read and delete permission on the target. Generic resource deletion enforces application permissions and verifies namespace-qualified resource-tree membership. Resource-action execution checks action permission before evaluating and applying the configured action.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Existing cascade deletion avoids adding finalizers to an Application already being deleted, supporting retries during deletion. Existing custom actions validate returned resources before mutation, but their multi-object execution is explicitly nontransactional. Neither recovery model is introduced by this PR.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Align the server's current-Application resource-action shortcut with namespace-qualified identity. A same-named resource in another namespace should follow resource-tree verification rather than resolve to the current Application.
