Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

⚠️ Important Note

O Blockchain is currently in early development/prototype stage. This is not production-ready software. The project is designed for discussion, feedback, and architectural exploration.

General Questions

What is O Blockchain?

O Blockchain is the world's first water price-based stablecoin system built on Bitcoin Core. It's a prototype that demonstrates how to provide stable, universal currency for all 8 billion people on Earth through a unique water price calibration mechanism.

Current Status: Early development - a base for discussion and community feedback, not ready for production deployment.

Why is it called "O"?

"O" represents the chemical symbol for Oxygen in water (Hβ‚‚O), symbolizing the fundamental element that sustains all life.

Important: The O coin itself has no fixed name. The O International foundation focuses solely on the design of calibration and stabilization of a water-based coin. Each nation can call it whatever they want - we don't dictate naming.

Why no fixed name?

  • Considering the international nature of this coin and the fact that humans use different alphabets and phonetics, it would be challenging and time-consuming to pick a single name for an international coin
  • Old currency names have historical, cultural, and social meanings that make people attached to them
  • We respect local preferences and won't be the judge of naming choices

Examples of how nations could name it:

  • France: Could return to the "Franc" as a water-based coin
  • Germany: Could use "Deutsche Mark" again as a water-based version
  • Europe: Could call it "O-Euro" or just "Euro"
  • Any country: Free to choose names that resonate with their culture and history

It's really up to people's preferences. The foundation provides the technology; communities choose the names.

How is O different from other cryptocurrencies?

  • Stability: Pegged to water price, not fiat or gold. O self-adapts to maintain 1:1 ratio with water
  • 142 Currencies: Multiple currencies matching national economies
  • Universal Basic Income: Designed to support UBI (long-term vision)
  • Unlimited Supply: Can scale to serve all humanity
  • Water Price-Based: Tied to the price of an actual basic human need

Technical Questions

How are exchange rates maintained between O currencies?

Randomly selected users and bots around the world measure bottled water prices in their local currency. Exchange rates are calculated from water price ratios:

Exchange Rate Formula:

If water in USA = $1.50/liter (O_USD)
And water in Europe = €1.20/liter (O_EUR)
Then theoretical exchange rate: 1 O_USD = 1.25 O_EUR (1.50 / 1.20)

Core Principle: Offender fines reward the offended - bad actors enrich good actors.

When the market exchange rate deviates from the theoretical rate (based on measured water prices):

  • New coins are created and distributed to holders of stable currencies (good actors)
  • Unstable currency holders (bad actors) are diluted - their share of total supply decreases
  • Bad actors lose purchasing power through dilution
  • Good actors gain purchasing power through new coin rewards
  • The system doesn't automatically correct rates; it creates powerful economic incentives (reward/dilution) forcing all actors to respect the water price-based theoretical rate

Note: O_ONLY is a special universal currency that exchanges 1:1 with all O currencies (used when a national currency disappears).

Why 142 currencies instead of one?

Different countries have different price levels and economic conditions. By having one O currency per national currency (O_USD, O_EUR, O_JPY, etc.), we can:

  • Match real-world economics
  • Maintain relevance to local prices
  • Allow easy mental calculation
  • Preserve national economic sovereignty

What is stabilization mining?

Stabilization mining is our unique consensus mechanism based on economic incentives, not automatic correction.

Core Principle: Offender fines reward the offended - bad actors enrich good actors.

How it works:

  1. Users measure water prices globally, establishing theoretical exchange rates
  2. When currency exchange rates deviate from these measured rates:
    • New coins are created and given to stable currency holders (good actors)
    • Unstable currency holders are diluted - their percentage of total supply shrinks (bad actors lose value)
  3. The redistribution happens through coin creation, not direct penalties or fines
  4. The system doesn't auto-correct prices; it creates powerful economic incentives through reward/dilution
  5. All actors are economically incentivized to respect the theoretical rate based on water price measurements

The more unstable a currency becomes, the more coins are created for stable holders and the more dilution unstable holders experience, creating a self-balancing incentive system.

How does the measurement system work?

  1. Randomly selected qualified users receive invitations to measure water prices
  2. They submit measurements (online or offline) with proof
  3. Multiple validators confirm each measurement
  4. Statistical analysis ensures accuracy
  5. Prices feed into stabilization system

See Measurement System Overview for details.

What prevents Sybil attacks?

We integrate with BrightID, a decentralized proof-of-personhood system that ensures one person = one identity without collecting personal data. BrightID uses social graph analysis to prevent fake accounts.

Is my privacy protected?

Yes! BrightID verification doesn't require:

  • Government ID
  • Personal data collection
  • Centralized databases
  • Geographic restrictions

Your identity is verified through social connections, not personal information.

Economic Questions

Is O inflationary?

No. Unlike fiat currencies, O's value is tied to water price (a constant basic need), not scarcity. We can generate unlimited supply without devaluation because the reference point (water price) remains stable.

How would Universal Basic Income work?

Note: UBI is a long-term vision and is not currently implemented.

If implemented, everyone would receive a monthly amount in their birth country's currency. Since all O currencies equal 1 liter of water price globally, this would provide the same purchasing power regardless of location.

The specific UBI amount would be determined by community governance, not predetermined by developers. The community would decide based on:

  • Economic analysis and modeling
  • Cost of basic needs globally
  • Sustainability considerations
  • Democratic consensus

Implementing UBI requires:

  • Robust identity verification at global scale
  • Governance mechanisms for distribution and decision-making
  • Economic testing and modeling
  • Community consensus on both implementation and amount
  • Significant additional development and testing

UBI is a goal the system is designed to eventually support, not a current feature.

How would the UBI amount be determined?

The UBI amount is not predetermined. It would be decided by the global community through democratic governance.

Factors the community might consider:

  • Cost of basic needs (food, shelter, water, healthcare)
  • Regional economic differences (already reflected in currency-specific O)
  • Economic sustainability and modeling
  • Input from economists, policymakers, and citizens
  • Real-world testing and adjustment

Example considerations that have been discussed:

  • Some suggest amounts equivalent to $400-700 USD/month in purchasing power
  • Others propose tying it to multiples of water cost (e.g., 7x for basic meals)
  • Final decision would emerge from community consensus

Important: Any UBI implementation would be a community decision through governance mechanisms, not imposed by developers.

Won't UBI cause inflation?

If UBI were implemented in the O system, it theoretically wouldn't cause inflation because:

  • Value is tied to water price (constant)
  • Supply adjusts dynamically
  • No debt creation
  • Self-stabilizing mechanism

Traditional UBI in fiat currency causes inflation because fiat has no real anchor. O has water price as its anchor.

Note: This is theoretical. Actual UBI implementation would require extensive economic testing and modeling before deployment.

How could this impact immigration?

If UBI were implemented, it could potentially:

  • Provide economic stability everywhere
  • Offer equal purchasing power globally
  • Create local opportunities
  • Build trust in local currencies
  • Reduce economic incentive to migrate

See Immigration Impact for full analysis of this long-term vision.

Note: These are potential future benefits if UBI is successfully implemented, not current features.

How does this fight climate change?

O can generate unlimited coins without debt to fund:

  • Massive reforestation
  • Ocean cleanup
  • Renewable energy
  • Carbon capture
  • Soil restoration

Traditional economies can't do this because they require ROI and create debt. See Climate Change Solution for details.

Scalability Questions

Can O scale to 8 billion users?

Not yet β€” and we won't claim otherwise. The published architecture keeps Layer 1 conservative (10-minute blocks; no block-time/block-size tricks) and moves retail payments to one shared multi-currency Layer 2 executor with deterministic replay and atomic FX, settling batched commitments to L1. That L2 is a design, not code, and consensus-correctness work comes first.

See Scalability Overview and Open Problems.

What is the current TPS?

~7 TPS (Bitcoin Core baseline). Hundreds of thousands of TPS is an engineering headroom target for the future Layer 2, not a measured result or a promise. Any future benchmark will be published with its full conditions.

How long until mainnet launch?

Timeline:

  • Phase 3: Testnet Launch (Q1 2025) - Current
  • Phase 4: Security Audits (Q2 2025)
  • Phase 5: Mainnet Launch (Q3 2025)
  • Phase 6: Global Adoption (2025-2030)

Currency Questions

Which currencies are supported?

142 O currencies matching major national currencies across:

  • Americas (32 currencies)
  • Europe (44 currencies)
  • Asia (35 currencies)
  • Africa (23 currencies)
  • Oceania (8 currencies)

See Currency Registry for complete list.

How do I exchange O currencies?

Use the built-in exchange system:

bitcoin-cli exchangecurrency "O_USD" "O_EUR" 100.00

Exchange rates are calculated from water prices and enforced by blockchain consensus. See Currency Exchange for details.

What happens if a national currency disappears?

We have a currency lifecycle system:

  • Automatic detection of disappeared currencies
  • Conversion to O_ONLY (universal O currency)
  • Users retain value
  • Emergency stabilization if needed

Mining Questions

How does mining work?

O Blockchain uses hybrid Proof-of-Work (PoW) and Proof-of-Business (PoB):

  • 33% PoW: Traditional Bitcoin mining
  • 67% PoB: Business participation rewards

Plus stabilization mining for maintaining currency stability.

What are the mining rewards?

  • Block Reward: 700 O (constant, no halving)
  • Stabilization Rewards: Dynamic based on volatility
  • Total Supply: Unlimited (stablecoin nature)

Why no halving?

Halving creates scarcity, which increases value over time. Stablecoins need stable value, so we maintain constant rewards to ensure predictable inflation and stability.

Can I mine O Blockchain?

Yes! You can:

  • Run a full node
  • Participate in PoW mining
  • Become a business miner (PoB)
  • Earn stabilization rewards

See Installation to get started.

Economic Model Questions

Who controls O Blockchain?

No one! It's fully decentralized:

  • Community governance
  • Open source code
  • Consensus-based decisions
  • No central authority

How is this funded?

  • Open source development (volunteer)
  • Future: Community treasury from mining
  • No pre-mine, no ICO, no VC funding
  • Fair launch for everyone

What prevents manipulation?

The system doesn't prevent water price manipulation in fiat terms. Instead:

  • O self-adapts: If water prices change in fiat currency, O's value adjusts to maintain 1 O = 1L water
  • Decentralized measurements: Users globally measure actual water prices
  • Multiple validators: Each measurement requires validation
  • Statistical significance: Outliers are filtered through statistical analysis
  • Consensus rules: Blockchain enforces measured rates
  • Open source transparency: All code and data is public

The key is that 1 O always equals 1 liter of water price, regardless of what that price is in fiat terms. O's purchasing power self-adapts to maintain this ratio.

Can governments ban O Blockchain?

They can try, but:

  • Fully decentralized (no servers to shut down)
  • Global network (impossible to stop everywhere)
  • BrightID works without government permission
  • Designed for censorship resistance

However, we also have compliance features for jurisdictions that want to regulate rather than ban.

The project is actively under development. We're focusing on:

  • Core system stability and security
  • Comprehensive testing
  • Community building
  • Documentation improvements

Will there be mobile apps?

Mobile applications (iOS and Android) are being considered for future development to make O Blockchain accessible to everyone.

Will there be a Lightning Network?

Lightning-style payment channels may sit on top of O's payment layer later for specialized bilateral flows, but they are not the foundation: channel liquidity management and 142-currency atomic FX make them a poor universal backbone. The chosen Layer 2 is a shared account-based executor β€” see Scalability Overview.
