What type of PR is this?

/kind bug

What this PR does / why we need it:

The Server struct kept its own copy of the config while ContainerServer, the OCI runtime (internal/oci) and the storage managers held a reference to the original object. When SIGHUP triggered a reload, only the Server copy was updated. That is why reloaded values showed up in crio status config but never reached the code that actually creates sandboxes and containers.

Practical effect (#10202): add a runtime handler via a drop-in, send SIGHUP, crio status config lists it, but RunPodSandbox keeps failing with failed to find runtime handler kata-qemu from runtime list map[crun:... runc:...] until the daemon is restarted.

The fix is to store the config as a pointer in Server, so a reload applies to one shared object. This also makes the other reloaded fields (log level, pause image, pinned images, seccomp profile, ...) work for all runtime consumers, not just the status endpoints.

Because all consumers now share the config, the runtime part of the reload is synchronized (commits three and four): the validated runtime configuration is published as an immutable snapshot via an atomic pointer (pkg/config/runtime_snapshot.go). Reload validates the candidate configuration first, then commits and publishes it in a single store, while all runtime consumers load one snapshot per request. The torn-reload window (Runtimes assigned before DefaultRuntime), the nil handler dereference in RuntimeType, and the half-applied state of a failed reload are no longer observable. The runtime hook caches (CPU load-balancing permission, exec_cpu_affinity) are refreshed when the snapshot changes, and sandbox creation resolves the runtime type and the kata default check from a single snapshot.

Reproduction and testing:

  • server/reload_sighup_test.go sends a real SIGHUP (unix.Kill(os.Getpid(), unix.SIGHUP)) in the mock-based server suite and then calls Runtime().ValidateRuntimeHandler("kata"), the same call RunPodSandbox makes (server/sandbox_run.go).
  • On unmodified main this fails with the exact error from Runtime handler added by SIGHUP appears in crio status config but remains unavailable to RunPodSandbox #10202; with the patch it passes.
  • internal/oci/concurrent_reload_test.go hammers runtime lookups from four readers while a writer publishes new runtime tables; it catches torn reads under -race (it caught a hole in the first snapshot implementation).
  • Commands and results (Linux, golang:1.26 container):
go test -tags "test containers_image_openpgp containers_image_ostree_stub exclude_graphdriver_btrfs exclude_graphdriver_devmapper" -count=1 ./server/ ./pkg/config/ ./internal/oci/
# before the fix: FAIL (reproduces #10202)
# after the fix: ok github.com/cri-o/cri-o/server ...
# ok github.com/cri-o/cri-o/pkg/config ...
# ok github.com/cri-o/cri-o/internal/oci ...

go test -race -tags "test ..." -count=1 ./server/ -run TestServer --ginkgo.focus ReloadConfig
# SUCCESS! -- 1 Passed | 0 Failed, no data races

# full unit suite (all packages except test/nri): 37 packages ok under -race

A note on -race: the remaining race reports in ./server/, ./internal/lib/statsserver/ and ./internal/watchdog/ were reproduced identically on unmodified main in a clean worktree (cri-streaming Start() vs buildURL(), and test-only DefaultConfig() global-cache races between parallel tests). They are pre-existing and untouched by this patch.

Which issue(s) this PR fixes:

Fixes #10202

Special notes for your reviewer:

  • The only behavioral change is that reload now updates the object runtime consumers actually read. The struct field is private, so no public API changes.
  • Eleven test sites constructing &Server{} were migrated to &Server{config: &config.Config{}}, which keeps the previous zero-field semantics.
  • Commit two restores process-global state (logrus hooks/level, SIGHUP registration) in the new test, addressing CodeRabbit's first review.
  • Commit three publishes the runtime configuration as an atomic snapshot (see above), addressing the data race concern from the review.
  • Commit four makes the runtime hook caches and the kernel-separation detection reload-aware, addressing CodeRabbit's second review.
  • Commit five publishes the CPU load-balancing permission as one atomically stored cache value (snapshot and result together), addressing CodeRabbit's third review.
  • Commit six threads the snapshot the server validated the runtime handler against through sandbox creation, so validation, runtime selection and the kernel-separation detection all resolve from one configuration instead of separate snapshot loads.
  • Known follow-up: when a request omits the runtime handler, the sandbox stores the empty handler and each lookup resolves the current default. After a SIGHUP changes DefaultRuntime, checkpoint metadata (OCIRuntime in config.dump) can name a different runtime than the one that created the checkpoint. This behavior predates this PR (the daemon always resolved the live default); persisting the resolved handler on the sandbox touches sandbox metadata, container creation, CRImportCheckpoint and config.dump, so it is better done in a dedicated follow-up PR.
  • Supersedes the stale fix: make runtime handlers added by SIGHUP reload available to RunPodSandbox #10213, whose approach was partially retracted by its author.
  • Integration tests are exercised by CI (this patch touches sandbox creation inputs only via the now-shared config object).

Does this PR introduce a user-facing change?

Configuration reloads (SIGHUP) now apply to all runtime consumers: runtime handlers and other settings changed in drop-in files are immediately usable by RunPodSandbox without restarting the daemon.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved runtime configuration reloads by validating changes before applying them, preventing partially applied configurations.
    • Ensured runtime settings remain consistent while configuration reloads occur concurrently.
    • Fixed runtime-specific image service selection after configuration changes.
    • Improved detection of runtime types and default runtime behavior.
    • Ensured updated runtime hooks and CPU affinity settings are applied reliably after reloads.
    • Improved runtime status reporting so handler and default-runtime information remains synchronized.

The Server struct stored a copy of the configuration while the
container server, the OCI runtime and the storage managers kept
a reference to the original object. The SIGHUP reload watcher
reloaded the copy, so reloaded values were visible to the status
endpoints but never reached sandbox creation and other runtime
consumers: newly added runtime handlers kept failing with
"failed to find runtime handler ..." until the daemon restart.

Store the config as a pointer so that the reload applies to a
single shared configuration object.

Document why Server.config is a shared pointer.

Server and ContainerServer receive the same *libconfig.Config. The SIGHUP handler updates this object in place, so a value copy would leave ContainerServer with stale settings. Add a short comment:

@alwaysprince05 I feel we fix the visibility issue but I feel we are creating a data race condition. One consumer was earlier using it didn't get bothered by the change but now both knows and can cause issues.

The reload spec adds a logrus hook, raises the log level and leaves
the SIGHUP watcher of its Server registered, all of which leaks into
subsequent specs running in the same process.

Snapshot the registered hooks via the mutex-guarded ReplaceHooks and
restore the hook set, the log level and the SIGHUP registration via
DeferCleanup, which runs after AfterEach so that the watcher is
detached only once the mocks of the spec are torn down.

You're right. Earlier the reload watcher only mutated a copy inside Server,
so runtime code never saw changes. Sharing the config fixes the visibility
bug, but Reload() now swaps the runtimes map while gRPC handlers read it,
and that can crash the daemon, not just serve a stale value.

I'd rather fix the sync in this PR itself — guard just what reload mutates
(mainly the runtimes map) instead of locking every reader. Happy to move it
to a followup if you prefer keeping this one scoped to the visibility fix.

Also pushed a small commit restoring the logrus hook/level and SIGHUP
registration in the new test (CodeRabbit's point, fair one). Could someone
drop an /ok-to-test so CI can run?

Make runtime reload and selection atomic. ReloadRuntimes assigns c.Runtimes before c.DefaultRuntime. A concurrent request can therefore read the new default from the old map. With an empty container handler, getRuntimeHandler returns (nil, nil), and newRuntimeImpl dereferences rh.RuntimeType. This causes an unrecovered panic. The configured gRPC interceptors do not recover panics, and grpc-go v1.83.2 allows the panic to terminate the CRI-O process. This is a major availability issue, not only a failed request.

Protect Runtimes and DefaultRuntime with the same synchronization during reload and lookup. Also return an error when the selected default handler is absent before newRuntimeImpl can dereference it.

Sharing the configuration with all runtime consumers made the SIGHUP
reload race with the gRPC handlers: ReloadRuntimes assigned the runtimes
table before the default runtime, so a concurrent request could read the
new table with the old default and, with a missing handler, dereference
a nil runtime handler in RuntimeType, which terminates the whole daemon.
A failed reload additionally left the shared configuration half-applied.

Publish the validated runtime configuration as an immutable snapshot via
an atomic pointer instead. Reload validates and mutates the candidate
configuration and only then commits it and publishes the snapshot, while
all consumers load a single snapshot, which makes the torn window and
the half-applied state unobservable. A missing default runtime handler
now returns a proper error instead of a nil handler.

internal/runtimehandlerhooks/runtime_handler_hooks_linux.go:117-125
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Read current runtime snapshots for CPU load-balancing permission.

HooksRetriever.Get reaches cpuLoadBalancingAllowed from container and sandbox RPCs. The function reads config.Runtimes directly while ReloadRuntimes replaces that field and publishes the atomic runtime snapshot. This violates the reload contract and can race with reload publication.

sync.Once also preserves the first result. If a reload adds crioann.CPULoadBalancing to a runtime's AllowedAnnotations, later requests still use the pre-reload result and omit DefaultCPULoadBalanceHooks.

Use RuntimeSnapshot().Runtimes and replace the permanent cache with snapshot-aware synchronization or recomputation. Fixing only the other runtime-dependent hook cache does not fix this path.

The hooks retriever read the runtimes table directly and cached both the
CPU load-balancing permission (sync.Once) and the high-performance hooks
(exec_cpu_affinity) forever, so reloaded runtime configurations were
never applied to sandboxes created afterwards. Reading the table also
raced with the atomic snapshot publication of the reload.

Read the runtime configuration from the published snapshot instead, and
recompute or recreate the cached values when the snapshot changes while
synchronizing the caches with concurrent requests. Resolve the runtime
type and the default runtime of sandbox creation from a single snapshot
so that both cannot describe different configurations during a reload.

Fixed this in commits three and four. Reload was writing the new runtimes
table before the default runtime, so a request landing in that window could
hit a missing handler — and with an empty handler that's a nil deref in
RuntimeType, which takes the whole daemon down.

The validated runtime config is now published as an immutable snapshot via
an atomic pointer. Reload validates the candidate first, swaps it in with a
single store, and readers grab one snapshot per request, so a half-applied
config is never visible. A missing default handler returns an error instead
of panicking, and the hook caches plus kernel-separation check pick up
reloads now too.

Added a concurrency test (reload loop + parallel lookups) that passes under
-race — it even caught a bug in my first attempt. The few remaining -race
failures happen identically on unmodified main.

@xw19 does this cover it? Happy to rework with an RWMutex if you'd prefer.

Comment thread internal/runtimehandlerhooks/runtime_handler_hooks_linux.go Outdated
The permission and the runtime snapshot it was computed for were stored
in two separate atomics, so a reload publishing a new snapshot during the
evaluation of the old one could pair the new snapshot with the old
result, and a request for the new configuration would reuse it.

Publish both values as one atomic unit instead.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Carry the validated runtime snapshot into RuntimeTypeFromSnapshot. runtimeHandler(req) validates the explicit handler with one snapshot. The Linux and FreeBSD sandbox paths later call RuntimeTypeFromSnapshot, which loads another snapshot. If SIGHUP removes the handler, the second lookup returns an error and RunPodSandbox fails. If SIGHUP changes the handler definition, the kernel-separation decision uses the changed definition. An explicit handler does not select the default in RuntimeTypeFromSnapshot; defaultIsKata applies only when the handler is empty. Reuse the first snapshot for validation and runtime selection to fix this race.

The server validated an explicit runtime handler against one runtime
snapshot, but sandbox creation later loaded a second snapshot for the
kernel separation detection. A reload publishing a new configuration in
between could fail a request whose handler was just removed, or apply a
changed handler definition to the kernel separation decision.

Capture the snapshot once while validating the runtime handler and pass
it through sandbox creation, so validation, runtime selection and the
kernel separation detection all resolve from the same configuration.

State the convention the runtime snapshot design relies on explicitly:
take a snapshot once per logical operation and resolve every value from
that single snapshot, passing it along when an operation spans several
components. This documents why the snapshot parameter exists on helpers
like RuntimeTypeInSnapshot and keeps future readers from reintroducing
the torn-read pattern the earlier commits fixed.

@xw19 just circling back on the race you flagged. It should be fixed in the commits I pushed after your review — Reload now validates the new config first and publishes it as an immutable snapshot through an atomic pointer (pkg/config/runtime_snapshot.go), so readers either see the old config or the fully validated new one, never something half-applied. The hook caches and the kernel-separation check refresh on reload too. Added internal/oci/concurrent_reload_test.go which runs parallel lookups against a reload loop, stays clean under -race.

I went with the snapshot instead of an RWMutex to keep the read path lock-free, but happy to rework it if you'd prefer the mutex. Could someone drop an /ok-to-test as well so CI can run? Thanks

All CI checks are green now — thanks for the /ok-to-test, @xw19! Whenever
you have a moment, could you re-review the atomic-snapshot commits so the
earlier changes-requested can be cleared? Also gently pinging @mrunalp,
@klihub and @littlejawa for a review when time permits. Thanks!
