/kind feature

What this PR does / why we need it:

Add the two cAdvisor file-LRU (page cache) memory gauges that containerd already exposes
under the memory metric set, but CRI-O does not:

  • container_memory_total_active_file_bytes
  • container_memory_total_inactive_file_bytes

container_memory_working_set_bytes already excludes reclaimable inactive
(cold) page cache, but hot file cache (active_file) is still included.
Cold cache is reclaimed first, but active_file is also reclaimable under
pressure, so a high working set can reflect a lot of hot page cache rather than
unreclaimable anonymous memory.

Also, follow-up to #9125 (left out from the original KEP/cri-tools checklist).

Special notes for your reviewer:

Does this PR introduce a user-facing change?

Added cAdvisor-compatible memory metrics `container_memory_total_active_file_bytes` and `container_memory_total_inactive_file_bytes` (gated by `included_pod_metrics=memory`).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added active file memory and inactive file memory metrics to container memory monitoring.
    • Metrics report current page-cache memory in bytes.
    • Metrics are available across both cgroup v1 and cgroup v2 environments.
    • Included the new metrics in the standard container memory metrics set, making them available alongside existing usage and working-set metrics.

Hi @michalskrivanek. Thanks for your PR.

I'm waiting for a cri-o member to verify that this patch is reasonable to test. If it is, they should reply with /ok-to-test on its own line. Until that is done, I will not automatically test new commits in this PR, but the usual testing commands by org members will still work.

Regular contributors should join the org to skip this step.

Once the patch is verified, the new status will be reflected by the ok-to-test label.

I understand the commands that are listed here.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds active and inactive file memory descriptors, computes their values from cgroup-specific statistics, emits two GAUGE metrics, registers them as base memory metrics, and adds unit and integration coverage.

Changes

Active and inactive file memory metrics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Metric descriptors and registration
internal/lib/statsserver/descriptors.go, internal/lib/statsserver/metrics.go
Adds descriptors for container_memory_total_active_file_bytes and container_memory_total_inactive_file_bytes. Registers both descriptors in the base memory metric set.
File memory collection
internal/lib/statsserver/memory_metrics_linux.go
Adds computeFileMemory for cgroup v1 and v2 statistic keys. Emits the computed values as GAUGE metrics.
Metric behavior tests
internal/lib/statsserver/metrics_test.go, test/cri-metrics.bats
Tests key selection, generated values, cgroup statistics, descriptor inclusion, and metric values within the existing tolerance.

@cragr FYI, though unrelated to THP.
@fabiand please feel free to elaborate on use case

CRI-O already subtracts inactive_file when computing working set, but
unlike cAdvisor and containerd it does not expose the raw file-LRU
gauges. Add container_memory_total_active_file_bytes and
container_memory_total_inactive_file_bytes under
included_pod_metrics=memory for cAdvisor/containerd parity.
