A simple Blackjack game implemented in Java. One of the design goals for this implementation is to limit 3rd party libraries and utilize only the JDK.
The game blackjack, has a few basic rules that are implemented in this release:
- A blackjack is a total score of 21
- A score above 21 results in a player being busted and removed from the game
- Each card value is represented by it's face value.
- The Jack, Queen and King are worth 10 points
- The Ace is worth 11 points.
- The player with the highest point total, less than or equal to 21 points, wins the game.
- If a player ties with the Dealer for the highest score, the win is awarded to the dealer.
- For this implementation, an Ace cannot be delared as low (1 point)
- Up to 5 players, plus the dealer can play
- The game does not support betting.
- JDK 1.8 or above (Tested with OpenJDK 11)
- Maven 3.x or above (Tested with 3.6)
- Console/Terminal environment supporting UTF-8 (Tested on Linux Mint 19.x, Windows should work as well)
Install Java JDK with Compiler and JavaDoc.

First Download Maven from https://maven.apache.org/download.cgi. Extract to a desired location. For this example Maven is copied to the user's HOME directory.

Update the environment and add Maven's binaries to the system PATH.

The blackjack software is built, tested, and packaged with the Maven system. Maven is executed from the command line in the root directory of the blackjack repository.
This command will clean the build (output) directories, which is configured to be the target directory.

BlackJack can be built from the command line by typing the mvn install command. The install command will also execute the unit tests. If any unittest fails, the build will fail.

The site command is optional, however it will build a small set of web pages summarizing the Maven software used to build the system. This command will also create any reports that have been configured. The blackjack system contains reports for JavaDocs, Test Summary and Code Coverage Reports.

For MS Windows to display the UTF-8 character set, the console's code page needs to be changed. The Windows Change Codepage program, chcp, can display and change the console's code page. To display the proper game symbols, change the codepage to 65001 as such:

The BlackJack software is started from the command line in a terminal window. The Blackjack software is packaged as a JAR file and can be executed using the java command.
After starting the software, the user is prompted for the number of players. Up to five players can play, not including the Dealer. After the number players is specified, the game begins and displays each user's hand of two (2) cards.

At the bottom of the display is the game menu. There are three possible actions.
- Hit - 'H', Deal the current player a single card.
- Stand - 'S', the current player will stand (stop) and play with his point total.
- Quit - 'Q', will quit the game.

The Hit command will deal the current player a single card. In the example below, Player#1 get a third card, a 10 of hearts, the total value of his hand is now 14.

When a Hit command is issued, if the player's hand total exceeds 21, then the user is Busted and loses the game. In the example below, Player#1 gets a forth and fifth card and now the total value of his hand is 30 and the player is busted. Turn is now passed to Player#2.

If a player is satisfied with their hand they can choose to Stand. This action will end the player's turn and the player's hand value will be used to attempt to win the game. In the example below, Player#2 has taken a third card and is Standing on hand total of 18.

The game ends when the Dealer's turn is over. In the event of a tie, even with blackjack, the Dealer will always be declared a winner. Once the game is over, the software will exit back to the terminal program. t
