Expose prek util generate-shell-completion and use it in the shell setup documentation. Generate the same scripts as the COMPLETE entry point without initializing the cache or overwriting prek.log.

The command performs cache/log initialization before emitting scripts, and a focused output-parity test is still needed.

🔵 Needs a closer look

Add regression coverage for all supported shells and verify the command leaves the cache and log untouched.

crates/prek/src/main.rs:160

  • Please add a regression assertion for the side-effect contract here. The new snapshot only checks Fish stdout; Store::from_settings() calls Store::init() and normal logging truncates prek.log, so seed PREK_HOME/prek.log and assert it is unchanged while the store markers/directories are still absent after this command.
    // Shell startup must not initialize the cache or overwrite the log from the last run.
    if let Some(Command::Util(UtilNamespace {
        command: UtilCommand::GenerateShellCompletion(args),
    })) = &cli.command
    {
        return cli::generate_shell_completion(args.shell);

crates/prek/tests/run.rs:3589

  • This snapshot covers only the Fish registration text. It does not verify the PR's other contract: registrations for the other supported shells must match the existing COMPLETE entry point, and invoking this command must leave the cache and prek.log untouched. Add focused assertions for those shell variants and the side-effect-free startup path so regressions in the early return cannot pass.
    cmd_snapshot!(context, context.command().args(["util", "generate-shell-completion", "fish"]), @r#"
    success: true
    exit_code: 0
    ----- stdout -----
    complete --keep-order --exclusive --command prek --arguments "(COMPLETE=fish prek -- (commandline --current-process --tokenize --cut-at-cursor) (commandline --current-token))"

    ----- stderr -----
    "#);

crates/prek/tests/run.rs:3589

  • This snapshot only verifies stdout, so it would still pass if Store::from_settings() and setup_logging() moved before the early return and created the cache or truncated $PREK_HOME/prek.log. Since avoiding those side effects is the core behavior of this PR, pre-create a sentinel log and assert it is unchanged, and assert the store marker/directories are absent immediately after this invocation, before the COMPLETE invocation below.
