PICkit2_FW

This repository contains firmware for PICkit2 programmer. It is based on v2.32.00 which was the last version published by Microchip.

It contains some improvements, mainly required by PICkitminus software, but it is fully backwards compatible. It can be used with MPLAB and the Microchip original PICkit2 software.

To compile the firmware, you need Microchip C18 compiler. I have used version 3.47.

Changes compared to v2.32.00:

  • Support for some PIC24 and dsPIC parts which require fast NOPs
  • Fix some P2GO (programmer-to-go) problems caused by new program entry scripts in PICkitminus
  • Add support for SPI FLASH memory instead of I2C EEPROM for programmer-to-go (Thanks to Adem Gdk!)

For using SPI EEPROM or SPI FLASH with P2GO see the below circuit diagram for connection. To keep the diagram simple, the +3.3V power supply circuit diagram has been omitted. Diagram drawn by Adem Gdk.

SPI FLASH connection to PIC18F2550

A 220-ohm resistor is included for protection against a possible bus conflict. If I2C EEPROM-supported firmware is loaded onto a PICkit 2 with SPI Flash pk2go memory, a bus conflict may occur. This can cause the RB0 pin to be overloaded. The resistor provides the necessary protection by keeping the current within a safe limit. It is not mandatory to use it.

It is important to use a logic level shifter on the MISO line. The logic high input limit of the PICkit 2's RB0 pin is 4V (under a 5V supply). Ready-made breakout boards for Arduino, etc., usually don't have a level shifter on the MISO line. MOSI lines go directly to the output. This needs to be considered.
