About

Nortantis is a fantasy map generator. It uses a simple tectonic plate simulation to create islands and continents with trees, rivers, and mountains. The result has the appearance of an old-fashioned hand-drawn map.

nortantis

Nortantis is a free, open-source fantasy map creator and editor, made by an author for authors. With it, you can quickly generate a random world, then fine-tune it to match your story's needs. Or, if you'd rather, you can start with a blank canvas (Edit -> Clear Entire Map) and draw your world exactly how you want it.

Nortantis uses a polygon-based tectonic plate simulation to create continents and islands with lakes, trees, rivers, mountains, cities, and more. The editing tools allow drawing land/water, political regions, rivers, roads, icons, text, and image overlays, along with styling your own background textures, color themes, and ocean waves.

For more information, examples, and pre-built installers, see the project page here.

If you wish to build Nortantis from source rather than use the installers, do the following:

  1. Checkout the source code.
  2. Install Java JDK 21 or later. How to do that will depend on your OS. A good internet search should tell you how.
  3. In a command prompt, navigate to the top 'nortantis' folder in the source code, then run this command: ./gradlew :run

Privacy policy: This program will not transfer any information to other networked systems unless specifically requested by the user or the person installing or operating it. (I had to add this for digital signing. Nortantis doesn't transfer any personal information.)
